Senior Commercial Manager
About This Role
The Senior Commercial Manager will oversee the end-to-end commercial and financial management of major, high-value infrastructure projects (typically valued in the hundreds of millions of pounds). Responsibilities cover project inception, tendering, contract negotiation, and commercial delivery.
Frequency-built the importance of commercial performance and financial control, you will lead and mentor a commercial team while managing risk, procurement, and supply chain strategy. Proven negotiation, leadership, and client engagement skills are essential—alongside deep experience in construction or infrastructure. A track record of managing international teams is critical.
Chartered status (RICS, ICES, or CIOB) is typically required.
Project Requirements
This role is focused on the ASTI Substation project in Scotland. The Senior Commercial Manager will lead on major contract engagements, shaping evolving business dynamics within a complex and technically advanced project.
Ideally, candidates should be Aberdeen-based, though location flexibility will be considered for exceptional talent.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide commercial input on Value Engineering reviews to optimize supply chain and project delivery.
- Coordinate a dynamic commercial team to identify and resolve programme issues efficiently.
- Manage preparation of monthly Cost Value Reports (CVR) and associated high-level commercial summaries.
- Report commercial progress to senior leadership and advise on strategic direction.
- Define client supply chain requirements and advise on alternative contract structures.
- Collaborate closely with legal teams to ensure legal and regulatory compliance.
- Prepare tender submissions by interpreting specifications, prizes, and commercial conditions.
- Lead coordination of:
- Supply contracts
- Cost control and disallowed expenditure
- Procurement processes
- Estimating and surveying
- Training and development
- Advise senior stakeholders on contractual risk, liabilities, or opportunities.
- Ensure synergies between procurement, quality assurance, and operational planning.

Essential Requirements
Experience & Skills
- Strong commercial acumen, exceptional negotiation, and influencing skills.
- Ability to proactively mentor and develop teams, ensuring talent retention and progression.
- Drive towards client delivery and meeting strict deadlines, with resilience to navigate challenges.
- Excellent engagement with internal and external stakeholders, including senior executives.
- Strategic mindset for managing risks, threats, and opportunities.
- Large-scale project experience, particularly in substation engineering or transmission infrastructure (procurement, commercial, and risk).
- An accredited membership (RICS or ICE) is desirable; alternatives through natural progression/performance only.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s (or Masters) degree in Quantity Surveying, or an equivalent level of knowledge via industry experience.
- Recognition/track record through a managing member body (RICS, ICES, or CIOB).
