Senior Commercial Manager

Senior Commercial Manager – Energy Business

Costain’s aim is to shape, create, and deliver solutions that transform the infrastructure ecosystem, achieving sustainable growth across its four essential markets in the UK: Transport, Water, Energy, and Defence.

Our Energy business helps customers transition to clean energy while delivering practical solutions to enhance energy infrastructure efficiency, sustainability, and resilience. We focus on providing engineering, construction, and digital solutions to support the UK’s transition towards a low-carbon economy.

As part of our drive for sustainable growth, we have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Commercial Manager to join our team. You will play a pivotal role in the commercial management of major infrastructure projects—overseeing contract recovery, financial management, and compliance with company procedures while supporting the Head of Commercial Director in resource management and succession planning.

This role demands a disciplined, commercially astute professional, capable of identifying, analysing, and mitigating risks, with the ability to deliver governance adherence, contract compliance, and efficient operational procedures. Strong communication, team leadership, and negotiation skills are essential, alongside the ability to inspire and motivate within a dynamic commercial team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Decision-Making & Risk Management: Apply judgment to resolve commercial risks while fostering continuous improvement in procedures and policy translation.
  • Commercial Leadership: Drive project profitability, oversee budget impacts, and ensure financial and contractual objectives are met.
  • Strategic Support: Provide commercial input during work-winning stages and ensure cross-government and cross-discipline consistency.
  • Project Oversight: Lead a project-based role, liaising with London, Manchester, and Aberdeen offices as needed—ideally with national energy sector experience (preferably National Grid).
  • Contract & Supply Chain Management: Spearhead main contract administration, supply chain governance, and document control.
  • Financial Control: Manage cost capture (CLRs), cash flow, and payment certification, and prepare compliance reports and valuations.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Negotiate with project/customer teams, reinforce internal/external collaborations, and resolve contractual issues.
  • Team Development: Upskill junior commercial personnel, manage recruitment, and mentor the team to deliver targets.
  • Project Assurance: Align with health & safety regulations, insurance commitments, risk management, and value-engineering strategies.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
