Senior Commercial Property Lawyer
Senior Commercial Property Solicitor/Fellow of CILEX (Legal Services) – Staffordshire County Council

The Role
We are seeking an experienced solicitor or Fellow of CILEX with practice rights to join our busy commercial property team.
This critical role involves handling a substantial and often legally complex workload of commercial property transactions and strategic projects across all Council departments and external clients. Much of the work extends beyond routine conveyancing, encompassing high-value, multi-party, and legally challenging matters.
Mandatory Requirement: All staff in legal services must attend our office in Stafford at least once a week, with frequency determined by pressing business needs.
Main Responsibilities
Legal Advisory & Transactional Work
- Providing complex legal advice on commercial property transactions, including (but not limited to):
- Sales and purchases
- Leases (primary and secondary)
- Development agreements (for schools, highways, and healthcare facilities)
- Compulsory purchase orders
- Option agreements
- Overage and lockout agreements
- Assisting in drafting Cabinet and Committee reports, and attending relevant meetings

Leadership & Training
- Supervising junior staff members and delivering training as necessary
- Ensuring compliance with the Legal Services Unit’s LEXCEL quality standards
- Contributing to Staffordshire Legal Services’ marketing and service development
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for an experienced, qualified Solicitor, Fellow of CILEX, or Barrister with practice rights who can demonstrate:
Essential Criteria
- Proven commercial property expertise in public sector and/or private practice
- In-depth knowledge of commercial real estate law (including non-domestic leases, compulsory purchase, and development agreements)
- Experience in engaging with senior stakeholders, representing clients in high-level case-related meetings, and resolving multi-party disputes
- Strong ability to draft, review, and negotiate complex legal agreements
- Exceptional communications skills (written, verbal, and digital)
Working Arrangements
This is a hybrid role. While regular office attendance in Stafford is required, we welcome discussions about flexible working options.
