The Role: Senior Commissioning Engineer – Electrical

In this critical position, you’ll play a pivotal role in commissioning first-of-class electrical power and distribution systems for the next-generation Dreadnought submarines.

Work closely with Engineering, Build Operations, the Royal Navy, and the MOD to ensure all commissioning activities are safe, compliant, and delivered to the highest technical standards in a high-risk environment.


Core Responsibilities:

  • Carry out independent commissioning and testing activities in high-risk settings
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Engineering, Royal Navy, MOD, Build Operations) to guarantee safety compliance and technical excellence
  • Research, author, and review electrical design and test documentation
  • Maintain accurate, full records of all activities per policy, procedure, and legislation
  • Mentor junior team members within electrical commissioning
  • Represent BAE Systems during:
    • Factory Acceptance Tests
    • Offsite testing
    • Contractor sea trials
    • International outworking activities (potential overseas travel required)
  • Adhere to all company policy, procedures, and legislative requirements in all assigned roles

Essential Requirements

  • Expertise in:
    • AC/DC electrical generation and power distribution systems
    • Electrical distribution systems, fire protection systems, and electrical testing
  • Technical understanding of:
    • Instrumentation systems including:
      • Electrostatic Discharge
      • Low Voltage Control
      • Data Communications
      • PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers)
      • Fibre Optics
  • Proven experience in high-risk industrial environments
  • Familiarity with Nuclear Site Licence and Authorisation Conditions
  • A strategic appreciation of how Test & Commissioning benefits national defence and UK industry

The Electrical Commissioning Team & Dreadnought Programme

You’ll join the ** Electrical Commissioning Team**, which is commissioning the first-of-class electrical power and distribution plant for the BAE Systems’ Dreadnought submarine programme.

This programme will deliver four SSBNs (Submarine-launched Ballistic Nuclear submarines) for the Royal Navy, supporting the UK’s Continuous At Sea Deterrence capability.
