Senior Commissioning Engineer – Mechanical (Propulsion)


Location: Barrow-In-Furness, hybrid

About the Role

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute commissioning, testing, and acceptance of propulsion mechanical systems aboard the Dreadnought Class submarines in a safety-critical, highly regulated environment.
  • Work autonomously with limited supervision while understanding safety implications in high-stakes contexts.
  • Collaborate across teams (Engineering, Royal Navy, MoD, Build Operations) to ensure tasks align with safety, compliance, and design standards.
  • Mentor less experienced team members using your expertise.
  • Develop, author, and review technical documentation (design and testing) to meet standards.
  • Maintain accurate work records, adhering to policies, procedural, and legal requirements.
  • Lead the organisation’s representation during Factory Acceptance Tests, contractor sea trials, and other industry activities (including possible overseas travel).

Core Duties

  • Deliver assigned activities in compliance with Company policy, procedures, and legislation.

Essential Skills & Experience

Technical Expertise:

  • Deep knowledge of:
    • Mechanical system operation (with preference for steam/condensate systems, lubricating oil, and cooling systems).
    • Commissioning of complex heavy machinery plants (e.g., diesels, turbo generators, steam turbine plants).
    • Test-related equipment & best practices (*e.g., specialised instrumentation and systems required for propulsion plant).
    • Mechanical flushing, pressure testing, and endurance testing to confirm mechanical integrity.
    • Awareness of Nuclear Site/Authorisation Conditions.

Program Context:

  • Work with the propulsion team for the Dreadnought-class submarines—a next-generation Royal Navy programme featuring four Submarine Strategic Nuclear (SSBN) boats designed to maintain Continous At Sea Deterrence (CASD).
