As part of a wider team, you’ll play a key role in:
- Designing and validating cutting-edge electrical systems across multiple naval platforms
- Commissioning advanced propulsion and mechanical systems across aircraft and submarines
- Supporting the Royal Navy’s Continuous At Sea Deterrent

What You’ll Be Doing
As a Senior Commissioning Engineer focused on Mechanical (Propulsion), you'll lead commissioning activities for Dreadnought-class submarines—delivering this epithelial engineering move for the Royal Navy and a pivotal part of maintaining the UK's ballistic missile capability.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Ensuring the safe operation, testing, and integration of mechanical propulsion systems for future-of-class submarines
- Undergoing complex commissioning activities in compliance with stringent defence, national and international safety regulations
- Collaborating closely with engineering, naval stakeholders, Royal Navy representatives and Ministry of Defence teams
- Developing and maintaining comprehensive commissioning, test and safety procedures in alignment with company policies and regulatory standards

- Commission/operate propulsion machinery systems, including:
- Lubrication systems
- Cooling systems
- Mechanical drive turbines
- Condensate recovery
- Lead/participate in factory acceptance testing, sea trials and other validation testing, sometimes overseas.
- Mentor junior team members, fostering knowledge transfer in commissioning practises.
- Represent BAE Systems credibility in contractually binding engagements across testing phases.
- Review and update process documentation as part of continuous improvement.
- Work with other commissioning/commercial teams and other discipline teams to ensure on-time, high-quality delivery of projects.
Essential Skills
To excel in this highly technical and safety-critical role, you must have:
- Hands-on experience with heavy machinery commissioning (e.g. cogeneration plants, steam turbines, electric motors)
- Proficiency in mechanical testing and validation:
- Mechanical flushing and test-rig technologies
- EN 50155 and other marine-focussed standards
- Pressure, vacuum and leak testing certifications
- Familiarity working in nuclear or classified facilities, with awareness of Appropriate Level Licensing in Submarine acceptance areas
- Recognised by your peers as a father figure in commissioning, with experience on large and complex mechanical systems
- Instinctive safety awareness, adhering to Control of Contractor Premises at DOAE (Defence, Ordnance, Armament, Equipment) estates
The Propulsion Mechanical Commissioning Team
You’ll be part of BAE Systems’ Dreadnought Submarine Programme—a 4-vessel suite designed to carry the UK's next generation of nuclear deterrent to sea.
This programme is part of one of the most important UK defence projects for decades—work you’ll do now will influence the safety, current operations and precedent setting contexts for Royal Navy submarines for decades. As a senior asset, you will not only be in a key technical position but also be enabling missions that protect the nation.

Require Security Clearances?
Due to the nature of our work, BAE Systems frequently hire personnel with the appropriate security vetting.
To be recruited, successful candidates may need NuSCRS/SCD security clearance or DBS. Depending on assignment, you may be asked to demonstrate 5-10 years of continuous UK residency for higher vetting queries.
