Senior Commissioning Engineer – Rock Power Connections

Mitie Power & Grid brings together three ICP business units—G2 Energy, ESM Power, and Rock Power Connections—alongside Custom Solar, the UK's leading behind-the-meter solar PV installer. Our focus is supporting decarbonisation through projects including utility-scale solar, wind, battery energy storage (BESS), and EV infrastructure.


About the Role

We are currently recruiting for a Senior Commissioning Engineer to join the Rock Power Connections Technical Operations Team. In this role, you will undertake commissioning activities and duties on a wide range of distribution power system plant, control and protection, and substation equipment to a high level of competence.


Responsibilities

Health, Safety, Environmental & Quality

  • Attend all company authorisation/induction courses as required by Mitie Power & Grid
  • Ensure personally held test equipment is maintained in good working order, within calibration, and initiate recalibration within appropriate deadlines
  • Maintain a safety and zero lost hours culture through:
    • Proactive adherence to site safety rules
    • Correct use of PPE
    • Offering improvements for safety and environmental processes
    • Reporting hazards and corrections where applicable
    • Following company-specific safety rules

Testing & Commissioning

  • Be flexible to travel across the UK when required, subject to fair and reasonable notice
  • Attend Commissioning Panel Meetings as necessary
  • Lead commissioning activities for designated projects, coordinating commissioning tasks and acting as the customer liaison point
  • Complete Commissioning Inspections, including off-load and on-load commissioning, in line with DNO/IDNO procedures
  • Prepare and collate commissioning documentation (e.g., drawing mark-ups, test data) for final project folders
  • Plan, write, and manage:
    • Commissioning programs
    • Commissioning method statements
    • Inspection schedules
  • Conduct comprehensive testing and final commissioning on various plant and equipment (including fault investigation, diagnostics, and rectification of faults) aligned with client specifications
  • Participate, conduct, and support Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs)
  • Mentor apprentice commissioning engineers as needed and embody strong staff development values
  • Identify training needs related to specific products for seamless commissioning execution

Day-to-Day Control

  • Provide technical support and direction (within competence) to Rock Power Connections’ Project Team, reinforcing technical standards
  • Liaise with and consult internal (and client) Design Engineers to resolve design-related queries effectively
  • Undertake temporary tasks/admin within your competence area as required by the company
  • Report progress (or issues) to Site Managers, Operations Managers, or Engineers responsible for project delivery
  • Assist and support the field team with:
    • Technical queries
    • Quality plans
    • Project commissioning programs
    • Risk assessments (RAMS)
    • EHS objectives

Requirements

Key job requirements include:

  • Working Safely certification (equivalent to a Safety Passport)
  • HNC or Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • DNO Competent Person qualification
  • Compassionate knowledge of CDM regulations
  • Demonstrable extensive experience as a Commissioning Engineer in the Electricity Supply Industry, spanning:
    • LV, MV, HV, and voltage schemes
    • Protection schemes and relay systems (including primary/secondary testing)
    • DC & AC systems
  • Proven fault-finding & system integration capability
  • Strong understanding of permit control and isolation protocols (e.g., National Grid ESO (NGED), SSE)
