Senior Compliance Officer

Job Description: Compliance Lead – Advisory & Core

Company Description

BHFT is a proprietary algorithmic trading firm. Our team manages the full trading cycle, from software development to creating and coding strategies and algorithms.

Our trading operations cover key exchanges, with a diverse portfolio spanning:

  • Equities
  • Equity derivatives
  • Options
  • Commodity futures
  • Rates futures

We utilise both High-Frequency Trading (HFT) and Medium-Frequency Trading (MFT) approaches while continually expanding into new markets and technologies. As a global firm of 200+ professionals, 70% are technical specialists in development, infrastructure, testing, and analytics, while the remaining team supports critical operations.

About the Role

The Advisory Compliance Lead will oversee global compliance operations, ensuring all trading activities align with regulatory and operational controls.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advisory Compliance (primary role, all regions):
    • Provide real-time trading guidance across all asset classes and venues
    • Develop and maintain a pre-cleared rules framework for recurring desk queries
    • Advise development, trading, and operations teams on compliant tool-building and process maintenance
    • Build a comprehensive algo trading governance framework, covering:
      • Pre-deployment approvals
      • Ongoing monitoring
      • Change management
      • Business continuity
      • Information security
      • Annual review
    • Support new market and product approvals

  • Core Compliance (supervising two Compliance Officers):

    • Oversee trade surveillance across all trading venues
    • Manage regulatory and exchange affairs, including:
      • Filings and registrations
      • Regulator/exchange inquiries
      • Client and due-diligence reviews
      • FCM interface coordination
    • Maintain policies and training programs globally
    • Oversee AML and sanctions screening, including:
      • Vendor and counterparty (brokers, FCMs) evaluations
  • Leadership & Escalation:

    • Supervise and develop two Compliance Officers
    • Represent compliance in cross-functional discussions with risk, development, and front-office teams
    • Serve as the escalation point for non-routine compliance matters

Requirements

Must-Have Experience & Knowledge

  • Hands-on experience developing compliance tools and systems (not just policies)
  • Direct compliance experience in:
    • Proprietary trading firms
    • Market makers
    • Electronic trading venues
    • Trading desks
  • Strong working knowledge across multiple asset classes, including:
    • Commodities
    • Rates
    • Equity futures
    • Options on futures
    • Equities
  • Familiarity with algorithmic trading controls and governance frameworks
  • Expertise in multi-venue regulatory obligations covering at least two of:
    • US (CFTC/NFA)
    • EU (MiFID II)
    • India (SEBI)
    • UK (FCA)
  • Deep understanding of core compliance policies, including:
    • AML
    • Recordkeeping
    • Whistleblowing
    • Conflicts of interest
  • Ability to write, implement, and maintain compliance policies while delivering timely, well-reasoned guidance

Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have)

  • Experience with equities compliance frameworks (e.g., Reg SHO, short selling regimes, locate obligations)
  • Knowledge of exchange membership obligations (ICE, CME, LME, NSE)
  • Exposure to position-limit regimes across multiple venues
  • Familiarity with Chinese exchange connectivity (CTP)
  • Hands-on experience with trade surveillance systems and alert handling
  • Background in building compliance frameworks from scratch
  • Experience automating AML/sanctions screening workflows
