Role Description
The Senior Technician (Civils 3D) will play an important role in the delivery of civil infrastructure projects, with a focus on drainage design and earthworks and road/path alignments. Work with engineering professionals at the concept, design and construction stages to develop effective solutions which meet project objectives, by using technical ability and CAD software. Utilise Civil 3D to produce engineering design solutions for drainage networks, surface water management, road/path alignments and earthworks schemes. When a solution is chosen, to interpret engineering information/designs to produce clear drawings and construction information suitable for planning, marketing, record or construction of civil engineering elements.

You will be tasked with undertaking:
- CAD/BIM Workflows and good practices
- Civil 3D (drainage, earthworks and alignment workflows)
- Drainage design software (e.g. Infodrainage)
- Earthworks cut/fill analysis
- Drainage design standards and surface water management

- To perform CAD QA checks and reports on CAD files created by others
- Observation of company Health & Safety, Environmental and Project Management procedures, as relevant to the tasks being undertaken
- In all activities, to contribute to the development of VEDA’s technical capabilities in the field of infrastructure engineering
- Responsible for ensuring delivery of drawing work to agreed project programmes
- Able to develop concept ideas into drawing details
- Develop and draft engineering drawings and plans
- Perform drafting tasks of engineering data as requested by customers or managers
- Ensure that all designs are prepared in line with current health and safety applicable legislation and standards and compliant with CDM requirements
- Provide a point of contact for the location and provision of existing drawings
- Creation of new and/or development of existing drawings
- Production of accurate detailed drawings from information provided by the designer(s) to the highest possible standard in a timely manner
- Perform CAD drawing and system checks on fellow colleagues work providing feedback on errors / weak spots to allow others to grow and improve
- Develop and manage Civil 3D models for drainage, road alignment earthworks schemes, ensuring accuracy and compliance with project requirements.
- Design and produce surface water and foul drainage networks within Civil 3D, including pipe layouts, manhole schedules, long sections, and drainage catchment analysis.
- Use Civil 3D to generate and manage pipe networks, and associated data for coordinated design outputs.
- Carry out drainage design coordination with external software (e.g. InfoDrainage), including importing/exporting data and validating model outputs.
- Apply design standards and best practices including SuDS principles, runoff control, and relevant UK standards (e.g. Sewers for Adoption / DCG).
- Develop earthworks models and grading designs using Civil 3D, including creation of surfaces, feature lines, grading objects, and corridors where required.
- Undertake and manage cut and fill analysis, material volume calculations, and optimisation of earthworks balance across sites.
- Produce earthworks strategies and levels designs, including platforming, road tie-ins, and site-wide grading solutions.
- Generate TIN surfaces, comparison surfaces, and volumetric reports to support design development and decision-making.
- Development of horizontal and vertical road alignments in Civil 3D, including geometry creation, profiles, long sections, corridors and tie-in details.
- Coordinate drainage and earthworks designs with highways, structures, and utilities, ensuring clash-free and buildable solutions within the Civil 3D environment.
- Ensure all Civil 3D models and drawings comply with company CAD/BIM standards, naming conventions, and data management protocols.
- Perform QA checks on Civil 3D models and outputs, including:
- Surface integrity checks
- Pipe network validation
- Volume and level verification
- Contribute to the development and improvement of Civil 3D workflows for drainage, road alignment and earthworks, including templates, styles, and automation processes.
- Follow the guidelines as set out in the CAD standards manual and offering continual development suggestions on improvements to the system
- Mentor junior staff
- To carry out other duties appropriate to the level and character of the post
- Assist the BIM & CAD Manager in implementing new workflows, procedures and standards within the business
- Assist with the production of BIM & CAD Libraries
- Attend site visits when required
- Adhere to all VEDA company guidelines
- Assist with the delivery programmes
- Assist with the project trackers
- Assist the project manager with delivery
- Assist the delivery team with drainage calculations and earthworks volume analysis
