Senior Construction Manager – Water Sector
Location: [TBA] Employer: VolkerFitzpatrick (part of VolkerWessels UK)
About the Role
VolkerFitzpatrick offers a wide range of civil engineering, infrastructure, and building services. We play a critical role in the UK’s development by delivering strategic infrastructure projects, as well as foundational work for both public and private sectors. Our expertise spans highways, airports, railway infrastructure, and commercial/industrial/educational buildings, but we are particularly focused on water and wastewater systems.
We are seeking an experienced Senior Construction Manager with deep expertise in the water sector to support the delivery of major infrastructure projects across the region.
In this role, you will:
- Take full ownership of all on-site activities, ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and on time
- Align project delivery against programme, cost, and quality objectives
- Work closely with our delivery teams, commercial, health & safety, and design partners

Responsibilities
- Project Execution: Lead on-site activities, managing construction phases, Programmes, and delivery outcomes for civil engineering and water infrastructure projects.
- Stakeholder Oversight: Engage constructively with clients, regulators, and APMs to ensure seamless delivery.
- Team Leadership: Direct subcontractors, site teams, and complex site operations, fostering a high-performing, collaborative environment.
- Risk & Performance Management: Mitigate risks, maintain commercial control, and embed quality assurance and health & safety compliance.
- ESG Commitment: Contribute to sustainability goals and environmental best practice, ensuring projects deliver net-zero ambitions.
- Technical Delivery: Apply civil engineering/futility sector knowledge to complex assets, including clean water, wastewater, treatment works, and pipelines, across ECI/Project delivery phases.
- Innovation & Problem-Solving: Build robust teams with a flexible and agile mindset, driving creative solutions to overcome challenges.

Requirements
- Experience: Proven 10+ years’ experience as a Works Manager or Construction Manager within the water sector, with specialist knowledge in:
- Clean water
- Wastewater
- Treating works
- Pipelines and related infrastructure
- Technical & Sector Expertise: Strong background in water supply, sewage treatment, and grid infrastructure, with experience in more than one asset type across the ECI/Project phases.
- Commercial & Cost Awareness: Proven track record in budget control, commercial negotiation, and dispute resolution.
- Leadership & Management:
- Ability to build and direct effective teams
- Experience managing subcontractors and suppliers
- Driving continuous improvement for team performance and business productivity
- Qualifications: Relevant commercial construction/engineering qualifications at degree level (or equivalent in practice) highly desired.
- Skills:
- Exceptional stakeholder communication (internal and external)
- Commercial awareness with strategic thinking
- Problem-solving mindset with a “can-do” attitude
- Ability to work under pressure and deliver positive outcomes
- Qualities: Resilience, decisive, agile, resilient, and passionate about driving outcomes in critical infrastructure delivery.
