Senior Construction Manager

Senior Construction Manager – Manchester Town Hall Project

About the Role

We are recruiting for a Senior Construction Manager to oversee and deliver the internal fit-out of Manchester Town Hall, a prestigious Grade I listed project within the public sector.

This role allows you to make an enduring contribution to a historic building while working on one of our most significant public sector schemes.

Responsibilities

As Senior Construction Manager, your key responsibilities include:

  • Leading, managing, and coordinating construction activities across the project
  • Compiling the Construction Phase Health and Safety Plan and advising on buildability and logistics
  • Overseeing the supply chain, from surveys through to main construction, ensuring high safety and quality standards
  • Managing day-to-day planning, supervision, record-keeping, and quality control of operations
  • Guiding and monitoring safe and compliant construction delivery
  • Supporting the commercial team in maintaining robust records and registered orders
  • Ensuring the project is delivered safely, efficiently, sustainably, and within budget, meeting client expectations and reinforcing Bovis’s reputation
  • Collaborating with decision-makers to provide technical expertise, integration, guidance, and advice
  • Leading multi-disciplinary project teams during procurement, construction, and close-out stages, ensuring adherence to programmes, budgets, and prescribed parameters

Core Responsibilities

  • Project Execution:
    • Support planning and logistics of all projects, including pre-construction programme development, project controls, and digital quality control systems.
    • Recruit and develop site construction teams to prepare for project delivery.
    • Lead initial surveys, risk assessments, and foundation works to lay the groundwork for main contracts.
    • Establish and maintain a health and safety culture on-site by implementing Incident and Injury Free (IIF) strategies and ensuring compliance.

  • Site Management:

    • Direct daily construction operations, ensuring contractor coordination and adherence to progress plans.
    • Monitor progress and adjust work methodologies to maintain timelines while mitigating costs and risks.
    • Uphold the Environmental Management Plan, tracking compliance, and coordinating with compliance teams.
  • Stakeholder & Communication:

    • Attend and engage in team meetings, promoting open communication across construction methodology, safety, and project shifts.
    • Clinically review build quality to align with contractual standards.
  • Procurement & Logistics:

    • Proactively manage site safety strategies, logistics, and logistics phasing.
    • Establish weekly delivery plans with complementary long-term programmes, ensuring contractor workflow synergy.
    • Develop production/performance measures, continuously evaluating constructors against targets.
  • Enduring Responsibilities:

    • Maintaining Bovis Construction Operations Process compliance.
    • Leading multi-trade team collaboration, modelling high standards of teamwork.

Requirements

Essential Qualifications & Certifications

  • Valid CSCS card for site activities
  • Relevant professional construction qualifications
    • Successful completion of Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS – 5-Day)
    • Chartership (e.g., CIOB) in progress or awarded
  • First Aid at Work certificate

Skills

  • Communication: Strong written and verbal ability to build relationships, influence teams, and align stakeholders.
  • Technical Competence:
    • Proficient in interpreting programmes, designs, specifications, and practical construction aspects.
    • Hands-on expertise in operational safety, programming, and regulatory adherence.

Knowledge

  • Extensive construction law, health and safety legislation, codes of practice adhering to modern UK standards.
  • Insight into commercial value engineering—optimising costs and quality adaptations during procurement and design.

Experience

  • Proven 20+ years (or similar) in construction management, design-development, and large project delivery.
  • Significant experience in £50m+ project portfolios, overseeing variety in residential, commercial, or heritage projects.
  • Background in pre-construction work,' strokes of works, and full-scale construction on Grade I/high liability sites.
