What is the role?
A trusted and valued senior legal advisor to the business, a construction law subject matter expert responsible for identifying, managing and mitigating legal risk in GAL's capital programmes and construction related activities in a manner that facilitates competitive advantage and commercial growth.
This role takes an office first hybrid approach here at London Gatwick, with three days a week in the office, two days remote, managed around the needs of the business.
What will you do?
- Provides legal advice primarily to the Construction team, Procurement and the wider business as required, in respect of construction and commercial matters of significant value and complexity
- Acts as trusted legal advisor for the business, providing legal risk mitigation advice to facilitate commercial growth
- Leads more junior members of the Legal team and wider business
- Advises on relevant legislative and regulatory requirements and keeps abreast of changes to that framework
- Advises in relation to ongoing contract management issues
- Educates the business in relation to legal risk identification and mitigation
- Assists General Counsel with Legal Function budget oversight and management
Do you have what we're looking for?
- Qualified solicitor or barrister with in construction law, acquired in private practice and/or within an in-house legal team
- Current practicing certificate
- Construction law subject matter expert, with deep expertise in drafting and negotiating various construction contracts, including NEC, FIDIC, JCT, EPC, and framework agreements.
- Strong understanding of strategic priorities and financial drivers, alongside the wider industry and evolving risk landscape.
- Strong understanding of risk allocation in construction projects and how risk interacts with procurement routes.
- Extensive experience advising organisations, managing legal risk to support competitive advantage and sustainable growth while remaining service oriented.
- Proven track record on complex, high-value and strategically significant matters, including Development Consent Orders, PPP/PFI and major infrastructure programmes
- Excellent communicator, also able to listen effectively in a team or business environment and build strong relationships.
- Experience of advising on ad hoc construction disputes, including adjudication, arbitration, litigation
- Commercially pragmatic, comfortable taking considered legal risk within agreed tolerances where appropriate mitigation is in place
- Experienced in advising and influencing at senior levels, with the credibility to shape key business decisions
- Strong judgement on where to focus and how to add most value to deliver optimal business outcomes
- Experience leading and developing teams, building capability and driving performance
