Senior Consultant – Transport Planning (Sports & Major Events)
This role is based at one of our UK offices and requires the ability to travel predominately within the UK, with some international travel.
About the Role
The Sports and Major Events Team at Steer are trusted specialists in event transport, crowd dynamics, and venue operations. With decades of hands-on experience at global tournaments and iconic venues, we deliver safe, seamless, and sustainable solutions for world-class events. This client-focused Senior Consultant position involves coordinating complex transport planning projects for high-profile sporting and entertainment events. You’ll lead project teams, deliver strategic advice, and ensure seamless collaboration across clients, stakeholders, and the broader business.
Key Responsibilities

Project Management Lead and coordinate transport planning projects for major events, ensuring all deliverables are client-focused, on-time, and aligned with project goals.

Client Engagement Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, developing communication materials, creating reports, and delivering technical findings with clarity and persuasiveness.

Technical Expertise Oversee the development, review, and delivery of transport strategies, including:
- Traffic modelling
- Infrastructure assessments (parking, public transport, and pedestrian flows)
- Sustainable mobility solutions Ensure compliance with design standards and operational feasibility.

Financial Oversight Work with finance teams to: Monitor project budgets Approve invoices Manage cost recovery processes

Data Analysis & Reporting Collect, analyse, and interpret transport data (e.g., attendance trends, arrival management) to pinpoint opportunities for operational efficiency and enhance team decision-making.

Stakeholder Coordination Liaise with local authorities, contractors, and partners to resolve challenges, negotiate contributions, and ensure regulatory compliance for different events.

Business Development Support client acquisition strategies, refine technical proposals, and identify growth opportunities within the sports and events market.
Skills & Requirements
Essential:
- Strong background in transport planning, event logistics, or infrastructure consulting.
- Excellent technical writing and presentation skills with experience preparing client-facing documents and internal reports.
- Proficiency managing budgets, preparing invoices, and monitoring client-funded initiatives.
- Ability to interpret traffic modelling outputs, design standards, and capacity assessments for transport/parking systems.
- Collaborative leadership skills – adept at managing multidisciplinary teams and multiple priorities under pressure.
Desirable:
- Experience in major sport events and a familiarity with governing bodies like The FA, World Rugby, or UEFA.
- Knowledge of UK traffic management, planning legislation (e.g. Section 106 contributions), or sustainable transport frameworks.
- Commercial awareness with an ability to identify revenue opportunities and expand service capabilities.

Pay & Compensation
All roles are paid according to a fair and liveable wage, subject to review based on skills, experience, and geographic benefits. An annual performance bonus is included as part of total reward.

- 60% office/on-site expectation for full-time roles (37.5-hour weekly average), with flexibility considered.
