Senior Controls Engineer
The Senior Controls Engineer will be responsible for the design, implementation, commissioning, and support of controls systems for material handling and automation projects, working both on-site and remotely.

Tasks and Qualifications
Principal Responsibilities
- Perform all controls design activities for delivery of a Dematic customer project from project launch to handover on site
- Perform the role of lead engineer for the controls portion of a Dematic customer project, including leading a team of controls engineers through the controls tasks on the project if required
- Maintain Dematic’s image as a top quality, professional company, by adopting an honest, professional, and attentive approach
- Understand the constraints of working on live sites and provide solutions that minimize the disruptions to client operations whilst working within the project scope
- Provide support, attend to system faults, and perform investigation and fault rectification where necessary
- Provide 24 hour x 7 day x 52 week emergency remote support cover as part of a pre-arranged rota
- Perform site supervisory duties on projects when required
- Support the sales team with controls costings and design concepts
- Recommending spare parts

Specific Responsibilities
Lead Engineer
- Be the lead engineer on projects
- Mentor and support other engineers on projects
- Support the Engineering Manager - Enhancements with project delivery
- Coordinate and ensure a consistent approach across projects for electrical design, software design, and commissioning activities
- Take responsibility for controls budgets and time constraints on projects
- Produce programmes including design, manufacturing, and site activities
- Hold controls design reviews for relevant projects
- Assist in developing and maintaining departmental procedures and standards, promoting a continuous improvement culture
Electrical Design
- Interpret design input information to produce control system designs
- Production of all associated documentation including, but not limited to, design calculations, design / safety specifications, operation, and maintenance manuals
- Procurement of electrical equipment including control panels and field devices
- Liaising with suppliers on technical matters
- Produce ITT’s and liaise with electrical installation supervisors and subcontractors
Software Design
- Design, production, and test of control software for material handling systems
- Production of PLC software, including safety-compliant code
- Follow the Version Control process
- Production of all associated documentation including, but not limited to, Functional Design Specifications, test specifications, and commissioning checklists
- Produce databases to facilitate the development of a visualisation system
- Carry out factory acceptance testing of PLC software prior to site delivery
- Emulation testing / virtual commissioning of completed PLC software prior to commencing on site
- Assist in development of standard blocks and solutions

Commissioning
- Produce required health and safety documentation including, but not limited to, method statements and risk assessments
- Commission controls systems on site and provide support to system integration commissioning activities
- Provide control system training for the end user
Knowledge & Experience Required
- Educated to a minimum of HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
- Several years of hands-on experience working in a similar role, including controls design and commissioning within an automation-based industry, ideally within the automated warehouse industry
- Advanced understanding of PLCs (Siemens or Allen Bradley)
- Advanced understanding of fieldbus systems and I/O equipment, e.g. Profibus, Profinet, ASi, TCP/IP
- Advanced understanding of other controls automation related equipment, e.g. Bar code scanners, HMIs, Variable frequency drives
- Working knowledge of relevant standards governing the controls automation industry
- Working knowledge of the Machinery Directive and the measures needed for compliance
- To be conversant in Word, Excel, Project, Outlook.
