Senior Cost Manager – Health, Life Science & Research

About the Role

We’re expanding our Health, Life Science & Research Cost Management team and are seeking a talented Senior Cost Manager based in Edinburgh. This is an opportunity to make a real impact, contributing to high-profile healthcare, research, and life sciences projects—ranging from complex international programmes to innovative national commissions.

Your expertise in cost management, strategic planning, estimating, and budgeting will be pivotal in:

  • Developing detailed cost plans
  • Conducting feasibility assessments
  • Benchmarking costs
  • Providing robust procurement support
  • Evaluating contractor proposals
  • Managing contract changes and variations
  • Ensuring timely, on-budget completions from RIBA Stage 1 design through to project handover

With a focus on the UK and Europe, particularly London, Oxford, and Cambridge, you’ll help deliver scalable solutions while mentoring junior teams.


Role Accountabilities

  • Lead quantity surveying and commercial cost management for clients in health, life science, research, and related sectors.
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates, feasibility analyses, and benchmark studies; develop and manage comprehensive cost plans.
  • Contribute to procurement activities, evaluate tenders, negotiate contractor proposals, and manage contract changes and variations.
  • Oversee cost control throughout construction and project handover; advise on value engineering and whole-life costing solutions.
  • Foster cross-disciplinary collaboration among design, engineering, and project delivery teams.
  • Mentor and support junior staff.

Qualifications & Experience

Professional Qualifications

  • MRICS Quantity Surveyor or equivalent professional qualification (applicants with substantial commercial experience from diverse backgrounds are also encouraged to apply).

Required Experience

  • Proven experience managing medium to large-scale construction projects (preferably in healthcare, research, or life sciences).
  • Strong cost estimating skills, including familiarity with industry rates, benchmarking, and cost databases.
  • Experience driving projects from initial concept to completion with a focus on building strong client relationships.
  • Proficiency in digital cost management systems (e.g., CostX, 5D BIM) with a willingness to adopt new technologies.
