Job Description

Role Title

Senior Cost Manager (Transmission & Distribution)

Overview

We’re looking for passionate Senior Cost Managers with Transmission and Distribution experience, to join our teams across our North, Midlands, and Scotland Region, operating from 8 regional offices, to work on a variety of interesting and challenging projects, both nationally and locally. You will be joining a growing team of like-minded people that have a passion for innovation and delivering cutting-edge solutions.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a team to successfully manage and deliver capital investment projects, including asset health refurbishment or replacement of existing assets.
  • Provide client-side cost management support during all stages of the project delivery lifecycle:
    • Option studies
    • Option development
    • Construction tender support
    • NEC contract administration
  • Lead the successful delivery of cost/commercial management services on multi-disciplinary Transmission, Distribution and Power Systems projects.
  • Conduct client-side cost/commercial management, including:
    • Stakeholder management
    • Risk management
    • Contract management
  • Ensure projects and commissions are delivered to client satisfaction for budget management.
  • Support and manage the cost/commercial management team, ensuring:
    • Appropriate resources are provided on projects
    • Client and business requirements are met
  • Actively manage contractors’ and subcontractors’ payments and final accounts in accordance with contract conditions.
  • Develop strong relationships with clients and cross-functional teams.
  • Support business development for existing and new clients.

Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • Experience of working within a client organisation, either directly or through co-location/secondment.
  • Highly competent in the NEC suite of contracts, particularly the:
    • Professional Services Contract (PSC)
    • Engineering and Construction Contract (ECC)
  • Experience of working as part of integrated, multi-organisation, collaborative teams.
  • Infrastructure and cost/commercial management experience, delivering complex projects.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • Highly motivated, with an excellent industry network.
  • relationship building skills, including:
    • Ability to build strong client and team relationships
    • Build and maintain networks of business contacts
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • A team player, with a ‘can-do’ attitude, adjective:
    • Outgoing
    • Polite
    • Patient
    • Diplomatic

    • Flexible
  • Experience of working with NGET business processes and supplier requirements, national development process 500.
  • Experience of working on projects in:
    • Substations
    • Overhead Lines
    • Cables (33kV – 400kV)
    • DNO (Distribution Network Operator) or TO (Transmission Operator)
  • Understanding of
    • The UK Transmission and Distribution System
    • Associated planning and equipment
  • Professional Development:
    • Continuous professional development engagement, including:
      • Pursuit of qualifications from:
        • RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors)
        • Other recognised professional bodies
  • Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Ability to effectively communicate and engage with:
      • Internal teams
      • Contractors
      • The public
    • To ensure project alignment and address concerns
  • Financial Acumen:
    • Skills in budget management and financial oversight to ensure projects are delivered within budget
  • Leadership and Team Development:
    • Capability to lead cost/commercial teams
    • Developing a collaborative environment
    • Supporting team members’ professional growth
  • Adaptability and Problem-Solving:
    • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances
    • Solve complex problems during project execution
  • Strategic Thinking:
    • Understanding the broader strategic goals of National Grid
    • How individual projects contribute to strategic goals
  • Minimum of five years’ cost/commercial management experience.
  • A relevant degree in:
    • Quantity surveying, or equivalent experience
  • Strong history in both:
    • Contract (NEC3 and NEC4) management
    • Cost/commercial management
  • A member of a related professional body, preferably chartered.
