Job Description: Senior Counsel (Europe and International Privacy, Data, AI & Cyber Legal)

This role is based within Visa’s Global Privacy Office, specifically within the Europe and International Privacy, Data, AI and Cyber Legal Team.

Reporting to: Senior Managing Counsel & Data Protection Officer (DPO).


Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership & Advice

    • Provide strategic legal advice on global privacy laws, including GDPR, EU AI Act, and other relevant regulations.
    • Act as a subject-matter expert in mergers & acquisitions (M&A), corporate ventures, and regulatory compliance.
  • Privacy & Data Compliance

    • Oversee and deliver efficient, high-quality legal support on privacy, data, AI & cyber matters.
    • Conduct Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs) for innovative data and AI use cases.
    • Lead incident response efforts for data breaches and privacy violations, updating senior leadership as needed.

  • Regulatory & Compliance Oversight

    • Monitor emerging privacy laws/trends and represent Visa in external forums.
    • Develop, maintain and implement privacy policies, procedures, and training programs.
    • Partner with Government Engagement teams to assess new laws, regulatory consultations and guidance.
  • Contractual & Contractual Compliance

    • Draft, negotiate and manage privacy-related contracts and agreements.
  • Business & Stakeholder Relations

    • Build strong partnerships with business stakeholders to align privacy support with business needs.
    • Enhance regulatory change management and knowledge sharing within the organization.
  • Proactive & Operational Leadership

    • Actively streamline processes to improve efficiency in legal support and compliance.
    • Identify and resolve privacy, data, AI, and cyber issues, liaising internally with Legal/Compliance teams and externally with third-party counsel.
    • Contribute to the cohesion, consistency and effectiveness of the Global Privacy Office.

This role is hybrid (3 days in office), with potential locations in London, Ireland, and/or Poland.


Qualifications & Experience

Required

✅ Legal Qualification & Experience:

  • Qualified lawyer in the UK, Ireland, or Poland (experience from other EU jurisdictions considered).
  • Extensive post-qualification experience (PQE) in privacy, data protection, AI & cyber law.

✅ Technical Expertise:

  • Demonstrable subject-matter expertise in privacy and AI legal frameworks.
  • Strong background in fintech and payments industry regulation.

✅ Professional Competencies:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • ** Legal drafting, contract negotiation, relationship management, and stakeholder collaboration**.
  • Analytical problem-solving, attention to detail, and adaptability.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in teams and manage high-pressure workloads efficiently.

✅ Personality & Attitude:

  • Integrity, intellectual curiosity, and eagerness to engage with novel challenges in privacy/data/cyber/AI.

Desirable (but not essential)

🔹 In-house legal experience (preferably in secondment or permanent roles). 🔹 Prior experience in a tech or digital legal environment. 🔹 Hands-on experience with cross-border multinational privacy compliance. 🔹 Knowledge of French (or other European languages). 🔹 Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) designation.
