About the Role
Band: UKRI Band E (UKRI Terms & Conditions) Salary: £46,743 gross per annum (pro rata if applicable) Location: Field-based (primary office: Swindon, with travel across the UK) Contract Type: Fixed Term (23 months)
This internal-only role sits within Innovate UK, a partner organisation of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). The position is open only to current UKRI employees with access to the Workday system or applications submitted via the How to Apply section below.
Job Purpose
You will support a Credit Specialist and Relationship Manager in assessing the risk of high-value loan transactions and maintain long-term engagement with corporate and SME loan beneficiaries.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
Core Origination Duties
- Collaborate with the Lead Credit Specialist to:
- Analyse financial and non-financial risk of applicant businesses using data, sensitivity tests, cashflow evaluations, and balance sheet assessments (S&I).
- Engage with applicants or third parties to gather additional financial/operational information.
- Prepare sensitivity analyses and recommend clear deal structures, conditionality, and outcomes to the Credit Committee alongside the Lead Specialist (S).
- Ensure credit governance integrity via audit-ready documentation, accurate minute-taking for risk committee meetings, and compliance with regulatory frameworks (S).
Transaction Execution
- Work with the Lending Operations team to:
- Quality-assure legal documentation, satisfy conditions precedent, and confirm security perfection (S).

Portfolio Management
- Maintain relationships with portfolio companies and Relationship Managers to:
- Conduct annual credit reviews, monitor covenant compliance, and identify early warning signs of distress.
- Provide risk mitigation recommendations or recovery interventions where needed (S&I).
Professional Development & Engagement
- Proactively develop technical and soft skills (financial literacy, stakeholder negotiation, reporting) to enhance future career progression.
- Support cross-functional projects that align with Innovate UK’s strategic goals.

Person Specification
Experience & Qualifications
- Essential:
- Degree-level qualification or equivalent credit/financial experience in business assessment.
- Demonstrated ability to analyse financial accounts (audited/management) and distil key strengths/weaknesses.
- Experience in process management (e.g., cashflow review, forecasting, covenant monitoring).
- Desirable:
- Financial qualification (e.g., CFA, ACCA) or alternative finance/banking expertise.
Competences (Innovate UK Core)
- Thinking and Problem Solving – Analogical reasoning to assess ambiguous evidence.
- Influencing & Stakeholder Management – Bridging technical gaps for non-finance audiences.
- Overarching Leadership – Collaborative problem-solving across teams and channels.
- Cultural & Ethical Awareness – Identifying biases and upholding professional standards.
Assessments will explore specific competencies at shortlisting/interview.

Travel & Responsibilities
- Role: Field-based with UK-wide travel (flexible hours during business; not midnight or local night commitments).
- UKRI leverages telepresence tools to streamline meetings.
- Fixed-term contract does not align with permanent assigned roles—employees are required to liaise with their manager (see UKRI Recruitment Policy for further details).
