Senior Critical Environment Technician (CET) – Cloud Operations & Innovation Team
Overview
As a Senior Critical Environment Technician (CET) in Microsoft’s Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) team, you will maintain the critical infrastructure that keeps our datacenters up and running. Your role involves:
- Coordinating with suppliers/vendors and managing operational, risk, and safety situations
- Mentoring Critical Environment Technicians
- Gaining a hands-on understanding of critical environment equipment
- Performing scheduled and unscheduled maintenance
- Responding to onsite incidents while collaborating with facilities professionals
- Monitoring equipment performance using telemetry and operational platforms

Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
- Specialise as an operations expert in a major CE discipline (e.g., electrical, mechanical, controls, generators) and execute advanced tasks independently
- Inspect and supervise all critical facility equipment ( e.g., controls, HVAC, mechanical systems) for unsafe or abnormal conditions, escalating issues as needed
- Utilise a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to track work orders and equipment assets
- Lead incident response teams for high-priority operational disruptions, collaborating with internal stakeholders to implement corrective repairs
- Enhance or develop emergency response procedures ( Emergency Operating Procedures – EOPs, Methods of Procedure – MOPs, Standard Operating Procedures – SOPs)
- Perform all maintenance types ( planned, predictive, corrective) while ensuring compliance with established SOPs
- Deep understanding of equipment function and troubleshooting capability within designated disciplines
- Provide technical guidance to junior colleagues on system diagnostics and resolution
- Adhere to strict safety, security, and compliance protocols ( job hazard assessments, environmental health & safety – EH&S, toolbox talks)
- Uphold Microsoft’s culture and core values
Qualifications
Required
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent, plus extensive experience in:
- Mission-critical infrastructure environments ( data centers, hospitals, industrial refineries, pharmaceutical manufacturing)
- Self-certified expertise in specialised field ( electrical, mechanical, controls) or related industry
- Valid driver’s license for country-specific travel and site visits
- Ability to perform onsite incident response during off-hours

Additional Security & Background Requirements
- Must meet Microsoft and jurisdiction-specific security screening standards, including:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check ( required upon hire + every two years)
- Physical/mental capability to perform mechanical/electrical repairs in confined spaces
Preferred (Not Mandatory)
- Advanced degrees or trade certifications with relevance to mission-critical infrastructure support

Compensation & Benefits
Salary (UK)
- Typical base pay range: £41,400–£57,900 per annum
- Additional benefits ( included in role specification)
