Senior Cyber Security Engineer in Rail Infrastructure
Location: Ashby or Chippenham (preferable) (Flexibility considered for candidates willing to relocate to Birmingham, Poole, York, or Glasgow)
About the Role
Siemens Mobility offers an exciting opportunity within our Rail Infrastructure business for a Senior Cyber Security Engineer.
Our mission is to deliver secure, integrated rail infrastructure systems, encompassing signalling, electrification, power SCADA, and station information, underpinned by advanced networks and cyber security. Our team works across the full project lifecycle, leveraging industry standards, proprietary solutions like CoreShield, and trusted third-party technologies to ensure resilient, compliant systems.
This Senior Cyber Security Engineer role is pivotal, demanding expertise in both product and end-to-end solution security—particularly within Operational Technology (OT) environments. Your focus will be on developing, leading, and implementing cyber security solutions across architecture design, security testing, and assurance evidence production, aligning with evolving industry standards.
Impact & Responsibilities
As a Senior Cyber Security Engineer, you will drive tangible impact by:
- Collaborating with clients
- Engaging with client security teams to align on strategy, risk appetite, and assurance requirements
- Specifying and maintaining project security requirements in accordance with standards such as NCSC CAF, ISO 27001, NIST, and IEC 62443
- Designing secure systems
- Planning and implementing secure system architectures, including zoning and conduits
- Evaluating third-party components and selecting appropriate security controls
- Performing risk and threat analysis
- Conducting threat modelling and defining risk mitigation countermeasures based on organisational criteria
- Compiling and reviewing security artefacts (e.g., threat models, risk assessments, product/solution security documentation)
- Supporting Operational Security
- Assisting the customer service team in developing, deploying, and monitoring cyber security solutions, including SIEM integration and incident response
- Configuring and implementing network security controls (e.g., firewalls, DMZs, security agents)
- B validating security implementations (e.g., conducting penetration testing to detect vulnerabilities and measure remediation effectiveness)
- Verification and Penetration Test Work
- Ensuring adherence to security requirements during system, factory, and site acceptance tests
- Participating in penetration testing to validate whether implementations meet customer security expectations
- Team & Professional Growth
- Acting as a mentor/leader for junior engineers, fostering continuous improvement in technical capability
- Representing security engineering at project milestones, driving lessons learned and contributing to vulnerability/incident response reviews
- Maintaining awareness of emerging cyber risks, technologies, and standards to support ongoing project delivery

Qualifications & Experience
To excel in this role, you should have:
- Education: A degree-level qualification (or equivalent) in engineering, science, or a numerate discipline.
- Security Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead cyber security engineering within time-critical, high-pressure OT environments.
- Standard Expertise: Proven practical application of the IEC 62443 standard series.
- Certifications (Preferred):
- NCSC Certified Degree
- Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
- NCSC Certified Cyber Professional (CCP)
- Global Industrial Cyber Security Professional Certification (GICSP)
- NCSC ICS Practitioners Security
- SANS ICS Security Professionals
- Penetration Testing Experience: Experience in conducting penetration testing (deemed desirable)
- Mentoring Skills: Success in mentoring and developing junior engineers
- Communication & Influence: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to engage internal teams and external clients.
