Senior Data Engineer
Industry: Health Tech / Health Insurance
Location: Sheffield, Hybrid (no more than twice a month in the office)
Salary: £65,000 - £73,000
We're working with a client we know very well, having placed multiple people with them over the years. A health tech and health insurance business based in Sheffield, they've been on a significant digital transformation journey and are absolutely delivering on it. Modern technology is at the heart of everything they do, from cloud-first infrastructure to data-driven decision making at every level, and they're building the engineering team to match that ambition.
We've placed multiple people here and they've all settled in well, they're enjoying themselves, and that tells you a lot about the culture. This is a business where good engineers are valued, heard, and given the space to make a real impact. If you're looking for somewhere that takes its technology seriously and genuinely invests in the people building it, this is worth your attention.
The Role
They're looking for a Senior Data Engineer to come in as the data SME across the team. This is a hands-on, high-impact role sitting at the intersection of software engineering and business intelligence, and that's what makes it interesting. You won't be siloed. You'll be working across both worlds, collaborating with the engineering team on one side and the BI team on the other, making sure data flows reliably, is well-structured, and is genuinely fit for purpose.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

You'll design, build, and maintain the ETL pipelines that underpin the organisation's reporting and analytics capabilities. You'll bring structure, standards, and best practice to the data platform, and you'll play a direct role in shaping how the business continues to evolve. As the data SME, you'll be embedded in the vision and mission of the organisation, not just executing tickets.
What You'll Be Doing
- Designing and building scalable ETL pipelines in AWS to process data from multiple sources
- Developing and optimising data access approaches to support reporting and analytics
- Architecting and implementing data solutions in AWS with a focus on security, scalability, and performance
- Collaborating with the BI team to ensure they have reliable access to well-structured, high-quality data for Power BI dashboards
- Implementing data quality checks and governance standards across the platform
- Engaging with stakeholders across the business, technical and non-technical, to understand data needs and translate them into solutions
- Working with software engineering teams to make sure data quality is baked into the development lifecycle from the start
- Creating and maintaining data documentation so the wider business can self-serve where appropriate
What They're Looking For
- Proven experience designing and building ETL pipelines and data platforms
- Strong AWS knowledge, ideally including Glue and Athena
- Python and CDK for infrastructure at scale
- Experience working in a cloud-first environment with IaC
- DBT experience is a plus
- A solid understanding of data quality frameworks and governance best practices
- DevOps and CI/CD experience
- The ability to bridge engineering and BI — you're as comfortable talking to a data analyst as you are a software engineer
- A proactive, hands-on mindset with a genuine interest in using data to drive better decisions across a business

What's In It For You
You'll be joining a business mid-transformation, which means the work is genuinely interesting and the decisions you make will matter. You'll have real influence over how the data platform develops, working alongside a team that's technically strong and culturally sound. The people we've placed here have stayed, progressed, and enjoyed themselves, and that's the best endorsement we can give.
On the logistics side, you'll be on-site in Sheffield a couple of times a month as and when needed, with the rest of your time remote. This role is commutable from Sheffield, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, or anywhere in between.
