Senior Data Engineer

About the Role
This is a senior, client-facing role with responsibility for shaping, designing, and delivering modern data and AI solutions across a range of client engagements. You will operate across the full solution lifecycle, including discovery, architecture design, hands-on delivery, and ongoing optimisation, leveraging Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, and AI capabilities.
As a trusted consultant and advisor, you will:
- Work closely with business and technical stakeholders to influence data and analytics strategy.
- Help clients realise tangible value from their data investments.
- Contribute to pre-sales activities, including proposals, solution design, and mentoring junior team members.
- Help grow Sword’s data and AI consultancy capability.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and deliver end-to-end data and analytics solutions, primarily using Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Fabric, and Power BI, but not limited to this stack.
- Act as a trusted advisor, translating business requirements into scalable, secure data architectures.
- Lead data engineering and architecture across:
- Data ingestion, storage, transformation, and analytics layers.
- Build and optimise Power BI reports and semantic models for actionable business insights.
- Integrate Azure AI/ML capabilities into solutions, including:
- Predictive analytics
- Large language models (LLMs)
- Automation workflows
- Drive pre-sales and client engagements, including:
- Solution shaping and proposals
- Technical presentations
- Ensure compliance with data governance, security, and regulatory standards.
- Stay ahead of AI innovations and advise clients on adoption and optimisation.

Requirements
Technical Expertise
- Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure data services:
- Azure Data Factory
- Azure Synapse Analytics
- Azure Data Lake
- Azure SQL / Cosmos DB
- Proven expertise in Microsoft Fabric, including:
- Lakehouse
- Warehousing
- Data Engineering
- Real-Time Analytics
- Advanced Power BI skills, including:
- Semantic modelling (DAX)
- Performance optimisation
- Enterprise-scale deployments
- Strong data architecture background, covering:
- Data modelling
- Integration patterns
- Modern analytics architectures
- Experience building and optimising data pipelines using:
- SQL
- Python
- Spark
- Knowledge of Azure ML, Cognitive Services, or Fabric AI solutions.
- Ability to integrate AI-driven insights (e.g., predictive models, NLP, LLMs) into analytical platforms and reporting solutions.
- Understanding of data governance, security, and compliance (e.g., RBAC, data quality frameworks).
- Familiarity with DevOps and CI/CD practices for data platforms:
- Azure DevOps
- Git-based deployments
- Automated pipelines
Domain & Soft Skills
- Experience in client-facing or consultancy environments, managing engagements across multiple stakeholders.
- Strong understanding of cloud cost management, performance tuning, and scalability.
- Exposure to pre-sales technical activities (e.g., solution design, cost estimations, proof-of-concepts) is desirable.
