Senior Data Engineer – Elanco (NYSE: ELAN)

Key Responsibilities
Product & Cross-Functional Leadership
- Partner with Product Managers to:
- Define priorities, timelines, and success metrics
- Lead squads through agile sprints and guide product discovery
- Enhance engineering designs and develop scalable, efficient solutions
- Drive modern product approaches such as:
- Discovery & prototyping sessions
- Embedding “working out loud” company values
- Leveraging data to inform and steer business strategies
Technical Governance & Quality
- Champion technical standards and process governance at the enterprise level
- Establish and enforce data quality practices to ensure a high bar for reliability
- Resolve escalation points, diagnose data engineering challenges, and enable problem-solving across teams

Data Capabilities and Modernisation
- Advocate for and educate stakeholders on Enterprise Data Engineering capabilities
- Drive adoption of standardized data languages, frameworks, and best practices
- Continuously review data standards to maintain the balance between pragmatism and effectiveness
- Identify opportunities to modernize our data architecture, maximizing ROI and scalability
Security, Compliance & Collaboration
- Work with core engineering groups to ensure:
- Data security, monitoring, and governance are embedded in designs
- Compliance with regulatory standards and risks are mitigated
- Provide an escalation point for data performance, security, and economic challenges
- Collaborate internally (across IT teams) and externally using engaging formats to communicate, learn, and drive impact
Leadership & Culture
- Inspire and engage the data engineering community across Elanco
- Mentor colleagues, fostering a culture of growth and knowledge-sharing
- Embody a learning mindset—serving as a thought leader and advocate for innovative data strategies
Minimum Qualifications
To apply for this role, you must have:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent professional experience
- 6+ years of experience building and delivering enterprise-scale data solutions, with preference given to those familiar with:
- Cloud platforms (Databricks, Azure, GCP)
- Large-scale data architectures and modern data infrastructures
- 2+ years in a technical leadership or coaching role, developing and guiding technical teams
Preferred Qualifications
Stronger candidates will have:
- Proven ability to lead and deliver complex data projects, leading them from ideation to execution
- Expertise in:
- Data pipelines, ETL/ELT, integration, and analytics practices
- Modern data architectures (sorted data lakehouse, scalable pipelines, APIs, and data contracts)
- SQL/NoSQL, FAIR data principles, and advanced data design
- 2+ years specialising in mentoring, coaching, and technical skill development
- Experience with Machine Learning workflows, data quality frameworks, and governance policies
- Global intelligence—understanding complex landscapes, including:
- Business models, regulatory frameworks, partnerships, and geographic environments
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with ability to:
- Communicate tech concepts and business value clearly across teams
- Lead collaborative improvement efforts
