Job Title: Database Engineer – Oracle & PostgreSQL Migration
Location: Sheffield-UK
Contract: Inside IR35
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Database Engineer with strong expertise in Oracle and PostgreSQL to support enterprise database migration and modernization initiatives. The successful candidate will drive data migration between Oracle and PostgreSQL databases, develop automated validation and data integrity checks, and ensure seamless, secure, and high-quality database migration.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, execute, and support Oracle to PostgreSQL database migration activities.
- Develop and automate data validation, reconciliation, and integrity checks at the database level.
- Create migration scripts and ETL processes using Python, Perl, or similar scripting languages.
- Analyze Oracle database objects, including schemas, PL/SQL, stored procedures, triggers, functions, and constraints, and migrate them to PostgreSQL.
- Convert and optimize PL/SQL code to PL/pgSQL where required.
- Utilize migration tools such as Ora2Pg, pgLoader, and other database migration utilities.
- Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve migration issues, data inconsistencies, and performance bottlenecks.
- Perform data quality checks, eliminate duplicates, and ensure successful migration outcomes.
- Collaborate with application, infrastructure, and testing teams throughout the migration lifecycle.
- Document migration processes, technical designs, and best practices.

Required Skills & Experience

- 5+ years of experience as a Database Engineer/DBA with Oracle and PostgreSQL.
- Strong knowledge of Oracle Database, including schemas, data types, PL/SQL, stored procedures, triggers, packages, and constraints.
- Strong experience with PostgreSQL, including schemas, PL/pgSQL, functions, extensions, indexing, and performance tuning.
- Hands-on experience with Oracle to PostgreSQL migration projects.
- Experience using migration tools such as Ora2Pg, pgLoader, or equivalent.
- Proficiency in SQL and scripting using Python, Perl, or Shell.
- Strong troubleshooting skills with experience resolving migration errors, compatibility issues, and data quality challenges.
- Good understanding of database performance tuning, backup, recovery, and security best practices.
