Our partner is seeking a Senior DBA - PostgreSQL & RDS based in the United Kingdom working remotely.
About the Role
This remote senior DBA role focuses on leading high-impact PostgreSQL and AWS RDS upgrade initiatives within a production-critical environment. This position is pivotal in ensuring seamless database migration activities with minimal downtime and zero data integrity compromise.
The role demands designing and executing robust upgrade strategies, including validation, rollback planning, and performance benchmarking. Collaboration with DevOps, infrastructure, and application teams is essential to coordinate complex maintenance windows. High availability and operational stability must be maintained throughout the upgrade lifecycle.
This is a hands-on technical role, ideal for an experienced DBA comfortable working in fast-paced, mission-critical environments.
Responsibilities
- Lead and execute PostgreSQL and AWS RDS version upgrades, ensuring smooth transitions, minimal service disruption, and full data integrity.
- Design and maintain detailed upgrade plans, rollback strategies, runbooks, and operational documentation for all migration activities.
- Conduct comprehensive pre- and post-upgrade validation, including:
- Health checks
- Performance benchmarking
- System stability verification
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize database performance across production environments during and after upgrade execution.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams (application, DevOps, infrastructure) to align upgrade schedules and execution plans.
- Execute critical maintenance and upgrade tasks during low-traffic windows (e.g., evenings/weekends) to ensure operational continuity.

Requirements
Technical Experience & Skills
- 5+ years of hands-on experience as a PostgreSQL DBA in production environments, preferably with large-scale systems.
- Strong expertise in AWS RDS for PostgreSQL, including:
- Multi-AZ deployments
- Snapshots
- Parameter groups
- RDS Proxy
- CloudWatch monitoring
- Proven experience leading major database upgrades, emphasizing:
- High availability
- Minimal downtime
- Controlled risk execution
- In-depth knowledge of:
- Query optimization
- Indexing strategies
- Vacuum/analyze tuning
- Connection management
- Experience with:
- Backup, recovery, and point-in-time restore in production
- High availability, disaster recovery, and failover architectures
- A plus for familiarity with:
- AWS Aurora PostgreSQL
- Replication strategies
- Infrastructure-as-code tools
Soft Skills
- Strong communication skills for collaborating in distributed and remote-first teams.
