Senior DBA – PostgreSQL & AWS RDS (Remote, UK-Based)

About the Role
This remote senior DBA role focuses on leading high-impact PostgreSQL and AWS RDS upgrade initiatives within a production-critical environment. The position plays a pivotal role in ensuring seamless database migration with:
- Minimal downtime
- Zero data integrity compromise
- Robust upgrade strategies (validation, rollback planning, performance benchmarking)
- High availability and operational stability
You’ll collaborate closely with DevOps, infrastructure, and application teams to coordinate complex maintenance windows while optimizing database performance and resilience under heavy production workloads. This is a hands-on technical role for an experienced DBA comfortable in fast-paced, mission-critical environments.
Key Accountabilities
- Upgrade Leadership: Lead and execute PostgreSQL and AWS RDS version upgrades, ensuring smooth transitions with minimal service disruption and full data integrity.
- Upgrade Planning & Documentation: Design and maintain comprehensive upgrade plans, rollback strategies, runbooks, and operational documentation for migration activities.
- Pre-Post Validation: Conduct thorough pre- and post-upgrade validation—including health checks, performance benchmarking, and system stability verification.
- Performance Tuning: Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize PostgreSQL database performance in production, both during and after upgrade execution.
- Cross-Team Coordination: Work closely with application, DevOps, and infrastructure teams to align upgrade schedules and execution plans.
- Maintenance Execution: Execute critical tasks during low-traffic windows (evenings/weekends) to maintain operational continuity.

Essential Requirements
- 5+ years of hands-on experience as a PostgreSQL DBA in large-scale, production environments.
- Strong AWS RDS knowledge, including:
- Multi-AZ deployments
- Snapshots & point-in-time recovery (PITR)
- Parameter groups & RDS Proxy configurations
- CloudWatch monitoring & alerts
- Proven ability to lead major database upgrades with rigorous focus on:
- High availability
- Minimal downtime
- Risk-controlled execution
- Query optimization & performance tuning expertise:
- Indexing strategies
- Vacuum/analyze tuning
- PostgreSQL connection management
- Experience with backup, recovery, and point-in-time restore in production.
- Deep understanding of:
- High availability & failover architectures
- Disaster recovery strategies
- Strong communication skills for collaboration in distributed/remote-first teams.
- (Bonus) Familiarity with:
- AWS Aurora PostgreSQL
- Replication strategies
- Infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation)
