Senior Dental Officer (Ref: 248669)
Substantive Full-time (37.5 hours per week) Salary: £84,180 – £98,460 per annum plus allowances
About the Role
We are seeking a qualified dentist to join our dynamic Public Dental Service in a well-equipped, salaried dental practice setting across remote and rural Shetland.
This is an exciting opportunity to work within a progressive team, delivering patient-centred care and participating in ongoing clinical development, including supported CPD, specialised skill-building, and access to secondary care links. There is also potential to develop leadership and management experience as the lead clinician for the clinical team.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide a full range of dental treatments for all age groups, catering to varied dental needs in rural, island, or town locations.
- Collaborate with the Director of Dentistry to further clinical skills and expertise.
- Lead a team of dental nurses, therapists, and support staff in delivering high-quality dental care.
- Contribute to oral health promotion, school inspections, and special needs dental care for priority groups.

NHS Shetland’s Public Dental Service covers:
- Comprehensive primary and secondary dental care (orthodontics, restorative, maxillofacial surgery).
- Special needs dentistry, school oral health programmes, and workforce development.
Allowances & Benefits
Scaled remuneration ensures this role reflects its rural and remote location requirements:
- Distant Islands Allowance: £2,578 per annum.
- Remote Areas Allowance: £4,500 per annum.
- Recruitment & Retention Allowance: £25,000, paid over two years (conditions apply).
- Out-of-Hours & On-call Payments (eligible).
- Annual Leave: up to 33 days + 8 public holidays (NHS service dependant).
