Senior Design Coordinator
Senior Design Coordinator – Energy, HWUP Project (National Grid)
Location: National Grid HQ, England Employer: Murphy Sector: Transmission, Distribution & Renewables EPC Projects
About the Role
The Senior Design Coordinator will work within National Grid’s HWUP Project, liaising with internal and external teams to ensure seamless design coordination, constructability assessments, and compliance with project deadlines. As a key interface between design, procurement, and on-site operations, this role bridges engineering, construction, and technological innovation—critical to maintaining Murphy’s leadership in sustainable energy solutions.

As part of our expanding repository of expertise, you will enforce technical excellence while overseeing the transition from conceptual designs to executable construction outputs.
Key Responsibilities
Core Project Coordination & Technical Leadership
- Review, validate, and advocate for the quality and completeness of design submissions from internal teams, contractors, and suppliers.
- Lead design engineering oversight for small-to-medium scale projects, ensuring adherence to British/Irish/EU safety/regulatory standards.
- Manage multidisciplinary design workflows, ensuring design updates, amendments, and requests for information (RFIs) are resolved efficiently.
- Coordinate and monitor design deliverables across internal designers, consultancies, BIM models, suppliers, and interface contractors.
- Ensure proper implementation of CDE systems (Aconex/approved alternatives) for secure, accessible document control—seeing stakeholders use them effectively to prevent revisions and delays.
- Progress-track design against project schedules, conducting weekly/monthly reporting to PM and TG teams, flagging risks/constraints early.
- Deliver review sessions on design detail using CAD and BIM tools (AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks), verifying constructability and permanent works alignment.
- Lead close-out of design issues through NCRs (Non-Conformance) processes, adhering to remedial timelines and escalation protocols.

Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Liaise with key teams to align design strategies with construction needs:
- Surveyors (laydowns, engineering constraints)
- Buyers (compliance with procurement specifications)
- Contract Managers/Project Managers (feasibility, financial trade-offs)
- Site Managers (unforeseen site design adjustments)
- Estimators (quantum/forensic accuracy of design costs)
Technical & Professional Requirements
Education & Certification
- Higher National Diploma (HND) or Certificate (HNC) in Civil/Structural/HV/LV Engineering, Construction Management, or BIM (relevant vocational qualifications recognised).
- Professional membership of:
- EngTech or Chartered Engineer status (CIBSE, IMechE, ICE, IStructE or equivalent)
- If pursuing Engineer Registration, credible participating steps in progress toward this.
Industry-Specific Skills

Design competency across renewable or conventional transmission/distribution infrastructure:
- Experience with large-multidisciplinary EPC projects (requireing concurrent delivery).
- Proven track record in design delivery lifecycles—from feasibility studies to DVD/FCD construction-ready documents.

Technical Software & Processes
- Proficient in Autodesk suite: AutoCAD, Revit for infrastructure outputs, Navisworks for clash detection.
- BIM familiarity: Awareness of ISO 19650 standards and coordinated BIM models.
- Experience with CDE document management systems (Aconex, Procore, similar).
