Senior Design Engineer
Mechanical Design Engineer
Scope of the Role
The Mechanical Design Engineer will take a lead role in the design, development, and governance of complex machine tool systems, offering support to the Mechanical Engineering Manager. The role requires significant experience in machine design, strong engineering judgement, and the ability to ensure designs meet internal standards, customer specifications, and applicable regulations.
The successful candidate will contribute not only to design execution but also to engineering best practice, continuous improvement, and technical decision-making across key projects.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of complex mechanisms, machine tool systems, and assemblies to meet project and customer requirements
- Adapt and refine existing machine designs, ensuring compliance with engineering standards, safety requirements, and customer specifications
- Actively support and uphold engineering governance, including design standards, change control, and technical sign-off processes
- Provide technical support and guidance to downstream departments, including manufacturing, assembly, commissioning, and service
- Identify and drive design improvements, value engineering opportunities, and risk reduction initiatives
- Develop and validate new processes, technologies, and materials where appropriate
- Manage and issue machine parts and assemblies on SAP, ensuring alignment with machine build and delivery schedules
- Support machine build, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities, both on-site and with customers where required
- Liaise with Sales and Project teams to provide technical input for bids, specifications, and feasibility reviews
- Produce and maintain high-quality engineering documentation in line with Fives Landis standards or customer-specific requirements
- Lead and participate in design reviews, DFMEAs, PFMEAs, and risk assessments, ensuring robust and compliant designs
- Work across the full machine lifecycle activities, including:
- Machine specification
- Mechanism design
- Tooling design
- System integration
- Promote and work in accordance with Fives Values, Directives, and the highest standards of health, safety, and engineering integrity
- Carry out any other reasonable duties as required to support the business

Key Skills Requirements
- Minimum HNC in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent (higher qualification desirable)
- Significant experience in mechanical design within a machine tool, special-purpose machinery, or capital equipment environment
- Proven experience working within formal engineering governance frameworks, including design control, reviews, and change management
- Strong working knowledge of 3D CAD systems, ideally Siemens NX, with the ability to produce detailed, production-ready drawings
- High level of competence in:
- Engineering drawings
- GD&T
- Tolerance analysis
- Experience supporting manufacturing, assembly, and commissioning of complex machines
- Confident user of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.)
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while contributing effectively within multidisciplinary teams
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage professionally with stakeholders at all levels of the organisation
- Organised, methodical, and capable of managing multiple engineering tasks and priorities
