Mechanical Design Engineer – Key Role
Position Summary
The Mechanical Design Engineer will take a leading role in the design, development, and governance of complex machine tool systems, supporting the Mechanical Engineering Manager. Key requirements include:
- Substantial experience in machine design
- Strong engineering judgement
- Ability to ensure designs meet internal standards, customer specifications, and regulatory compliance
Candidates will drive design execution, promote engineering best practices, and contribute to continuous improvement and technical decision-making across critical projects.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Design and Development Leadership
- Lead the design and development of complex mechanisms, machine tool systems, and assemblies to meet project and customer requirements.
- Adapt and refine existing machine designs, ensuring compliance with:
- Engineering standards
- Safety requirements
- Customer specifications
Governance, Compliance, and Cross-Functional Support
- Uphold engineering governance, including:
- Design standards
- Change control
- Technical sign-off processes
- Provide technical support and guidance to:
- Manufacturing
- Assembly
- Commissioning
- Service
Continuous Improvement and Process Optimization
- Identify and drive:
- Design improvements
- Value engineering opportunities
- Risk reduction initiatives
- Develop and validate new:
- Processes
- Technologies
- Materials
Project and Production Coordination
- Manage machine parts and assemblies in SAP, aligning with machine build and delivery schedules.
- Support:
- On-site machine builds
- Commissioning activities
- Customer troubleshooting

Stakeholder Engagement and Documentation
- Liaise with:
- Sales Teams
- Project Teams To provide technical input for:
- Bids
- Specifications
- Feasibility reviews
- Produce and maintain high-quality engineering documentation compliant with:
- Fives Landis standards
- Customer-specific requirements
Lifecycle and Process Enhancements
- Participate in:
- Design reviews
- DFMEAs (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis)
- PFMEAs (Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis)
- Risk assessments
- Engage in full machine lifecycle activities:
- Machine specification
- Mechanism design
- Tooling design
- System integration
Compliance and Ethical Standards
- Promote and uphold:
- Fives Values & Directives
- Health and Safety policies
- Engineering integrity standards
Business Support
- Carry out additional tasks as necessary to support the organisation’s goals.
Key Skills Requirements
Technical Qualifications
- Minimum: HNC in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- Preferred: Higher qualifications in related fields.
Industry-Specific Experience
- Significant hands-on experience in mechanical design, particularly within:
- Machine tools
- Special purpose machinery
- Capital equipment development

Governance and Methodology
- Proven experience working within formal engineering governance frameworks, including:
- Design control processes
- Reviews
- Change management systems
CAD and Design Competencies
- Strong working knowledge of 3D CAD systems, ideally:
- Siemens NX
- Ability to produce production-ready designs with detailed engineering drawings
Tolerance and GD&T Expertise
- High-level competence in:
- GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing)
- Tolerance analysis
Manufacturing and Commissioning Support
- Experience supporting the manufacturing, assembly, and commissioning of complex machines.
Software Proficiency
- Confident Microsoft Office user (e.g., Word, Excel)
Work Practices
- Independent driving force with minimal supervision requirements
- Strong team player with multi-disciplinary collaboration skills
Communication and Organization
- Excellent communication skills for engaging across organisational levels.
- Highly organised, able to manage multiple engineering tasks and priorities.
