Senior Design Engineer – Protection & Control

Siemens Rail Electrification powers electric trains, trams, and metros worldwide by designing, installing, and maintaining all the necessary equipment, including substations and overhead line systems. Their work ensures these vehicles receive the electricity they need to operate safely and efficiently, supporting modern electric transport while helping to reduce environmental impact.
Siemens Mobility is seeking an experienced Senior Protection & Control Design Engineer to join our Rail Infrastructure – Electrification business. Reporting to the Protection & Control Principal Design Engineer, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality protection and control designs across major railway electrification projects throughout the UK. Working as part of a specialist engineering team, you will support the full project lifecycle from concept development and bid support through to commissioning and entry into service.
You'll make a difference by...
- Delivering protection and control designs, studies and technical documentation that meet required quality, safety and compliance standards across railway electrification projects.
- Developing protection philosophies, coordination studies and relay configurations, including IEC 61850-based protection, control and substation automation solutions.
- Producing engineering deliverables such as single-line diagrams, schematics, communication architectures, equipment specifications, bills of materials and commissioning documentation.
- Supporting testing, commissioning and fault investigation activities, including FATs, SATs, root cause analysis and performance improvement recommendations.
- Acting as a technical lead on projects by managing engineering interfaces, contributing to risk management activities and supporting project delivery objectives.
- Collaborating with customers, suppliers and multidisciplinary engineering teams while providing technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers.

What you'll need to succeed...
Must haves:
- Degree or HND in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
- Strong understanding of three-phase and 25kV railway protection principles, fault analysis and protection philosophy development.
- Experience configuring, implementing, testing and troubleshooting protection systems, including IEC 61850, RTU and SCADA solutions.
- Knowledge of Network Rail, British and international standards together with an understanding of project safety requirements.
- Experience supporting the full project lifecycle, including design, construction, testing, commissioning and stakeholder management activities.
- Commercial awareness with the ability to work effectively within project, contract and delivery constraints.
