Senior Design Engineer

Senior Design Engineer – Electrification & Energy Solutions (E&ES)

Career Area: Engineering

At Caterpillar Inc., your work shapes real progress. Join a global team where innovation isn’t just talked about—it’s delivered. Caterpillar empowers engineers to solve challenging problems, creating sustainability across industries.

About the Role

As the world transitions to smart, electrified infrastructure, Caterpillar’s Electrification & Energy Solutions (E&ES) division builds the next generation of zero-emission technologies.

We’re looking for a Senior Design Engineer to join the UK Rapid Electrification Development (RED) team. In this dynamic role, you’ll take concept-to-deployment responsibility for demonstrating Caterpillar’s electrified machine solutions—working in cross-functional task forces alongside engineering, build, and customer teams to accelerate meaningful progress.

Your work will stretch into:

  • ** Customer-driven problem-solving:** Directly engaging with customers, customer-facing teams, and production units.
  • ** Hardware-first engineering:** Actively contributing to prototyping and validation of new electric powertrain systems.
  • ** Global impact:** Solutions addressing real-world challenges from concept through mass deployment.
  • ** Rapid development cycles:** Operating at pace in customer-facing environments, with flexible work artefacts like DFMEA, DFM, and GD&T.

Job Title: Senior Design Engineer

Grade: 23 Salary: £57,737 – £86,605 per annum Location: Peterborough, UK – On-site, 5 days a week Reference Number: Not provided

Key Responsibilities

Core Engineering Leadership

  • Lead concept and detailed design activities (mechanical/electrical) for electrified OEM machines and subsystems, guiding them from ideas, to prototypes, to commercial validation.
  • Drive technical recommendations and decisions through empowered “next-problem-solving” taskforces, bridging engineering, manufacturing, and customer teams.
  • Provide stakeholder-driven oversight—aligning technical activity plans, decision rationale, and project challenges for leadership and broad impact.

Customer & Commercial Focus

  • Own the full lifecycle of demonstrator or pre-production machines: from translating customer requirements into technical needs, through iterative testing, to ensuring Case program-ready field performance.
  • Collaborate directly with customers and commercial teams to validate solutions, troubleshoot challenges, and deliver practical solutions addressing real-world machine applications.

Cross-Functional Development

  • Partner with build, validation, and systems teams to iteratively improve demonstrator machines, driving rapid development loops within tight timelines.
  • Partner with compliance, regulatory, and certification teams to ensure designs meet market and market-region requirements (e.g., country-specific safety standards, EMI, and environmental approvals).

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
