Senior Design Engineer – Job Description

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Design Engineer to lead and deliver detailed structural design and checking of temporary and permanent works for civil engineering projects. This role also provides technical support to assist operational teams across a diverse portfolio of infrastructure schemes.

The organisation is a long-established civil engineering and infrastructure specialist with over 40 years of experience delivering design, engineering, and maintenance services across sectors including water, transport, built environment, and energy. Key Responsibilities

Technical Design

  • Lead, prepare, and oversee detailed technical designs including calculations, drawings, risk assessments, and design certificates.
  • Undertake preliminary designs and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Obtain independent checks and/or third-party technical approvals (e.g., rail sector).
  • Ensure all design outputs comply with CDM regulations, health & safety requirements, and environmental standards.

  • Provide technical information, guidance, and advice to project teams.
  • Develop or propose value-engineered alternative solutions during design or construction phases.
  • Review complex or unusual method statements.
  • Assess defects or compensation events and recommend technical solutions.

Administrative Support

  • Assist with approval processes for external suppliers.
  • Support development and maintenance of design processes, procedures, and standards.
  • Provide or obtain pricing information for estimating purposes.

General Responsibilities

  • Liaise with clients, suppliers, and third parties as required.
  • Promote best practices internally.
  • Support positive representation of the organisation to customers and partners.

About You

Essential

  • Strong experience in structural engineering, including detailed design of permanent or temporary works.
  • Proficiency with frame analysis software, structural design software, and CAD tools.
  • Ability to produce hand calculations or use tools such as MathCAD.
  • Working knowledge of relevant industry standards (Eurocodes, BS 5975, and applicable British Standards).
  • Experience in a structural engineering office, including design calculations, analysis, methodology development, and oversight of team members.
  • Degree (or equivalent) in Structural or Civil Engineering.
  • Thorough understanding of structural principles and construction methods.
  • Ability to ensure designs meet performance, safety, quality, and cost requirements.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work independently while supporting and coaching others.
  • Ability to identify structural suitability and critical load cases.

  • Combined site and design office experience.
  • Incorporated or Chartered membership (or working toward it).
  • CSCS card.
