Senior Design Engineer

Senior Design Engineer – HV Substations (Protection & Control)

About the Role

Murphy Applied Engineering is recruiting for a Senior Design Engineer with expertise in HV Substations, Protection & Control systems.

Our teams deliver multidisciplinary engineering solutions across civil, structural, mechanical, geotechnical, and process engineering—offering expert guidance to colleagues and external clients alike.


Responsibilities

  • Conceptual & Technical Leadership

    • Interpret client design specifications and lead the team in developing a high-level conceptual design
    • Take ownership of producing specifications and Bills of Quantities (BoQ) to support Requests for Quotations (RFQs)
    • Assess supplier quotations, ensuring alignment with technical requirements
  • Engineering & Design Execution

    • Prepare timelines for detailed design deliverables
    • Ensure accurate chargeable work tracking and time recording
    • Maintain strict adherence to company procedures, standards, and codes of practice (e.g., National Grid TP141)
    • Oversee creation of detailed designs, calculations, drawings, and risk assessments

  • Team & Project Management

    • Mentor and supervise junior engineers and contractors, guaranteeing quality and timely outputs
    • Conduct variable checks on internal and external designs
    • Undertake site visits/surveys and coordinate with broader project teams
  • Technical & Stakeholder Engagement

    • Liaise with internal/external designers, consulting firms, and suppliers
    • Manage Change Controls and interface requirements under Project Teams/Design Managers
    • Provide technical advancements on substation automation from tender to commissioning

Requirements

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven expertise in high-voltage (HV) transmission/distribution substation design
  • Experience with Protection & Control systems (UKGrid standards preferred)
  • National Grid TP141 certification for HV Substation Protection & Control (CDAE)
  • Ability to manufact combat documentation, risk assessments, and supplier interfaces
  • Self-motivated leader with strong mentoring and training abilities
