Caterpillar’s Electrification & Energy Solutions (E&ES) division is at the forefront of advancing electrified powertrain systems, battery adoption, and zero-emission technologies. Job Summary

We are seeking a Senior Design Engineer to join the UK Rapid Electrification Development (RED) Team. This dynamic cross-functional team operates as an empowered taskforce, consistently underpinned by technical leadership to bridge the gap from concept to deployment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead design from concept development to prototype validation and customer deployment.
  • Guide cross-functional teams (encompassing engineering, build, validation, and customers) in owning the end-to-end electrification journey.
  • Ensure designs are market-ready through compliance and certification collaboration.

This role is ideal for an engineer seeking to influence next-generation machine design while shaping next-gen electrification strategies.

What You’ll Do

Core Responsibilities:

  • Leadership in Design:
    • Steer electrified machine systems and subsystems through all project stages—from concept to prototype build and validation.
  • Technical Direction:
    • Champion engineering decisions in multidisciplinary taskforces, leveraging expertise across mechanical, electrical, and system integration disciplines.
  • Customer Collaboration:
    • Align with customers to define requirements, troubleshoot challenges, and deliver solutions that meet real-world needs.
  • Cross-Team Coordination:
    • Partner with build teams and validation facilities to accelerate the development, testing, and refinement of demonstrator machines.
  • Regulatory & Compliance Involvement:
    • Collaborate with compliance teams to ensure designs meet regional/market regulations for smooth deployment and approval.
  • Project Governance:
    • Own documentation—creating and updating design plans, reports, and stakeholder briefings to ensure transparency and proactive issue resolution.
  • Problem-Solving & Improvement:
    • Conduct root-cause analysis and design reviews to enhance performance, durability, and customer value.
  • Mentorship & Training:
    • Guide and upskill junior/hiring teams, fostering engineering excellence within the project.

Required Skills

Essential Criteria:

  • Degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Proven ability to design and validate mechanical/electrical systems in a product development environment.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership, including driving multidisciplinary team decisions and aligning engineering with business goals.
  • Strong analytical and structured problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in modern CAD tools (e.g., Creo or equivalent) with deep technical drawing and PDM process knowledge.

Strongly Preferred Experience:

  • Familiarity with electrified machine systems, ePowertrain technologies (high/low-voltage), or system integration.
  • Direct exposure to prototype development, demonstrator projects, or pre-commercial product validation.
  • Hands-on teamwork involving customers, suppliers, build teams, and validation.
  • Experience with engineering processes such as DFMEA (Failure Mode & Effects Analysis), DFM (Manufacturability), and GD&T (Tolerance Analysis).
  • Compliance and regulatory subset expertise, notably relevant for market-specific product approvals.
