Senior Developer (Automation Centre) – Salford | Sheffield (Hybrid)

Location: Salford | Sheffield (hybrid) Salary: £62,109 (National) plus skills allowance of up to £18,291, pending assessment Advert Close Date: 2nd July 2026


🚀 Job Summary

This role is based within the Automation Centre, part of Automation and Innovation at the Home Office. The team serves multiple portfolios across the organisation, delivering quick solutions where needed. The primary technologies used will depend on project requirements, but the stack typically includes:

  • Backend: .NET, Python
  • Frontend: JavaScript, React, TypeScript
  • Data & Platforms: PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Cosmos DB, MongoDB, Power BI
  • DevOps: Azure & AWS with Terraform; GitHub & Azure DevOps for CI/CD
  • AI: Azure Foundry, Azure OpenAI, AWS Bedrock
  • Low-code: Microsoft Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate, Logic Apps)

The Senior Developer is a key player in product delivery, responsible for developing core components and selecting appropriate technologies. Your subject matter expertise will allow you to operate with greater autonomy, making technical decisions independently.

You’ll contribute to our codebase by writing clean, secure, TDD-driven applications while ensuring code is open and reusable where possible. As a mentor and leader, you’ll guide other engineers, support recruitment processes, and assess technical skills.

  • Designing, reviewing, and maintaining complex software applications, components, and documentation (SWDN)
  • Collaborating in designing, coding, testing, documenting, amending, and refactoring moderately complex programs/scripts (PROG)
  • Designing test cases under independent direction, mapping outcomes against criteria and reporting testing results (TEST)
  • Providing technical expertise for system configuration, enabling equipment configuration for system testing (SINT)
  • Managing and updating data systems to ensure availability, integrity, and searchability of information (DATM)
  • Maintaining application support processes, handling support requests per agreed processes, investigating issues, and reporting findings (ASUP)
