Senior DevOps Engineer (Ref: 19227)

Senior DevOps Engineer – National Position

Location: Nationally affording Delivery Locations (including options such as East Midlands (England), East of England, London (region), North East England, North West England, Scotland, South East England, South West England, Wales, West Midlands (England), Yorkshire and the Humber)


About the Role

As a Senior DevOps Engineer at HMCTS (Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunal Service), you will:

  • Collaborate with diverse stakeholders (developers, architects, analysts, business teams) to innovate and transform public services through smarter technology.
  • Maintain, evolve, and enhance critical Wowza (media streaming) and Camunda (workflow orchestration) instances in production environments.
  • Partner with software development teams to improve DevOps practices across teams.

Technologies We Depend On

We leverage a number of key technologies, including but not limited to:

  • Backend: Java, Spring Boot
  • Frontend: Node.js
  • Integrations: Power Platform (low-code)

Key Responsibilities

You will be expected to:

  • Design, build, maintain, and improve CI/CD pipelines, deployment tooling, and engineering standards for:

    • Services spanning multiple data centres and cloud environments
    • Cross-team, cross-platform reliability improvements
  • Translate technical requirements into actionable DevOps solutions, ensuring:

    • Safe, fast, and scalable product delivery
    • Repeatable, scalable, resilient, and highly available deployment strategies
  • Automate:

    • Infrastructure provisioning
    • Configuration/task orchestration
    • Shell/Python/Groovy scripting approaches
  • Support and maintain live production services, including but not limited to:

    • Incident response, root cause analysis
    • Operational troubleshooting
    • Patching, vulnerability management
  • Provide deep technical support to delivery teams in:

    • Diagnosing bottlenecks
    • Resolving complex outages/products
  • Implement and enhance observability, encompassing:

    • Monitoring (Dynatrace)
    • Alerting systems
    • Dashboards/logging solutions
    • Service health checks & API-based integration health
  • Drive security best practices along the delivery pipeline:

    • Secrets management (vaults/HashiCorp solutions)
    • Secure coding and DevSecOps maturity
    • Certificate lifecycle management
    • Vulnerability remediation

  • Optimise service performance/availability across cost constraints, balancing:

    • Performance metrics
    • Capacity planning
    • Business impact assessments
  • Lead internal capacity-building initiatives:

    • Mentor junior engineers

    • Champion DevOps awareness company-wide
  • Participate in procurement, vendor engagement, and recruitment activities as required.

  • Vocalise support for emergency/overnight interventions including:

    • Pipelines updates
    • Critical image upgrades (e.g. Wowza) outside regular hours (updates may require post-7PM rollouts during weekdays)
    • Incident-driven smoke tests post-start-of-day (ambitious target: resolve issues by 09:00).

Essential Criteria

  • Cloud-native expertise: Design and manage Kubernetes/Docker environments in complex enterprise scenarios.
  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Hands-on proficiency with Terraform; automation scripting in languages like Bash, Python, or Groovy.
  • CI/CD Mastery: Deep knowledge of pipeline design, Jenkins, source control, reproduction automation.
  • Operational Support: Hands-on experience in live-service incident management, support escalations, monitoring (e.g. Dynatrace), and platform stability.
  • Security Solidarity: Acumen in secure coding, secrets management, identity/access management (IAM), vulnerability detection (pen testing, NBMS).
  • Engineering Tradecraft: Capable of architecting scalable, resilient solutions with:
    • Deep networking (VPN design, firewall/proxy transparency)
    • Certificate management
    • Secrets rotation & rotation policies
    • APIs, AI/service mesh considerations

Desirable (Bonus) Criteria

  • Experience with:
    • Wowza (video/audio streaming platforms)
    • Camunda (or workflow management engines)
    • Protocol/ticketing systems where operational excellence is paramount

Working Patterns

Core Hours

  • Primary working hours: 08:00–17:00 (Monday–Friday)
  • For 2-touchcall/2-incident-firstrai “team” roles, expect:
    • Sunday parallel foreseeing standby
    • Daily pre-work smoke testing (begin prior to 8AM)
    • Expected resolution of indieorfest results reporting by same time or within 9AM.

Occasional Emergency Support

  • Requires availability outside regular hours for:
    • CI/CD pipeline fairly issues or disruption (with associated diagnostics/fixing requirements)
    • Video media/streaming issues (Wowza maintenance conducted after 19:00)
    • Non-daytime outage investigations.
