Job Title: Senior Digital Content Developer
Location:
Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, Didcot, Oxfordshire - Onsite

Full-time, 37.5 hours per week

Digital Curriculum Lead
Main purpose of the job
The Senior Digital Content Developer will support and lead the technical design and development of high-quality, accessible digital learning solutions for a range of clients and sectors. Working closely with Subject Matter Experts and the wider creative team, the post holder will translate learning requirements, storyboards, and source material into engaging eLearning experiences. They will provide senior technical input throughout the project lifecycle and ongoing maintenance. The role is primarily hands-on, while also supporting the coordination, mentoring, and quality assurance of the Digital team.
Main duties & key responsibilities
- Develop and maintain engaging digital learning interventions for desktop, tablet, and mobile devices using appropriate authoring tools and technologies.
- Develop eLearning from approved learning designs, storyboards, scripts, and subject-matter-expert material, ensuring the final product meets agreed learning outcomes, scope, timescales, and quality standards.
- Apply learning theory and instructional design principles when developing content, to ensure activities support the agreed learning outcomes.
- Lead on visual design and learner experience, ensuring solutions are intuitive, accessible, visually engaging, and appropriate for the target audience.
- Create and edit digital assets including graphics, illustrations, animation, audio, video, and interactive learning elements where required.
- Apply accessibility best practice throughout development, including WCAG 2.2 AA requirements, keyboard navigation, captions, transcripts, alternative text, clear language, and accessible visual design.
- Package, test, and troubleshoot eLearning content for deployment through client Learning Management Systems and web platforms, including SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 packages.
- Carry out functional, browser, device, and accessibility testing, documenting findings, and resolving defects before release.
- Provide technical input to the support of the company’s eLearning platform.
- Manage allocated development workstreams, including estimating effort, contributing to project plans, identifying risks or dependencies, and communicating progress clearly to the Digital Curriculum Lead and Project Manager.
- Provide technical support during client review, user acceptance testing, and launch, including investigating platform, SCORM, or learner-access issues where appropriate.
- Mentor and provide day-to-day guidance to Digital Content Developers, supporting their technical development, quality of work, and confidence in delivery.
- Support the Digital Curriculum Lead with workload planning, technical decision-making, continuous improvement, and the development of team processes, templates, and quality standards.
- Contribute technical and creative input to bid responses, demonstrations, prototypes, and proposals for prospective clients.
- Keep up to date with developments in eLearning technology, accessibility, authoring tools, and learning design, sharing relevant learning with colleagues.

Qualifications / experience
Essential
- Relevant qualification in digital learning, instructional design, multimedia, graphic design, digital media, or a related discipline; or equivalent professional experience.
- Demonstrable experience creating high-quality eLearning using Articulate Storyline 360 and Rise 360.
- Experience working with Learning Management Systems and packaging content to SCORM standards.
- Experience of managing own workload and delivery workstreams within agreed timescales.
- Eligibility to undergo and obtain the level of UK security clearance required by client contracts.
Desired
- Experience working with public-sector, defence, security, transport, or regulated-sector clients.
- Experience of Moodle, LearnUpon, LearnWorlds, WordPress, or similar LMS/CMS platforms.
- Experience of H5P and basic HTML/CSS, including Bootstrap frameworks.
- Experience creating or editing video, audio, animation, or immersive learning content.
- Knowledge of SCORM reporting, completion tracking, and LMS integration.
- Formal project-management training or qualification, such as PRINCE2 Foundation.

Skills and attributes
Essential
- Strong creative, visual, and technical design skills, with a demonstrable portfolio of digital learning work.
- Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud, including relevant tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, Audition, and Acrobat.
- Sound understanding of accessible digital learning design and WCAG 2.2 AA principles.
- Strong understanding of SCORM, LMS deployment, and eLearning testing.
- Ability to interpret client specifications, technical documentation, and learning requirements accurately.
- Ability to turn complex subject matter into clear, engaging, and learner-focused digital content.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality assurance.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to explain technical issues clearly to both internal colleagues and clients.
- Effective interpersonal, collaboration, and stakeholder-management skills.
- Ability to organize competing priorities, work independently, and meet tight deadlines.
Desired
- Working knowledge of WordPress and Elementor.
- Experience estimating development effort and contributing to project schedules.
- Experience of mentoring or supporting junior developers.
- Experience with HTML/CSS, JavaScript, or Bootstrap.
