Senior Digital & Transformation Portfolio Manager
Location & Work Arrangement: Hybrid working across hubs in Birmingham, Blackpool, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, or Sheffield Salary: £57,946, plus 28.97% employer pension contributions (worth £16,787 per year)
About the Role
At the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), we’re seeking Senior Digital & Transformation Portfolio Managers to lead stringent digital and transformation portfolios. As the UK’s largest government department, we manage payments exceeding £195bn annually, empowering millions through work and welfare.
In this role, you’ll:
- Partner with key stakeholders to prioritise, oversee performance and risk across live and pipeline projects
- Recommend evidence-based solutions and identify strategic opportunities for new initiatives
- Act as a visible, influential leader, driving excellence through recruitment, coaching, and capability development
- Set professional frameworks and industry standards

Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Delivery
- Shape and influence strategic planning and portfolio ambitions aligned with organisational goals
- Provide independent portfolio assurance to senior leaders
- Deliver on large-scale digital or change portfolios
- Anticipate delivery risks, resolve issues, and maintain momentum toward outcomes
Performance Improvement & Assurance
- Develop and enhance portfolio frameworks, processes, and controls
- Standardise prioritisation, tracking, and reporting mechanisms
- Embed consistent best practices across teams

Data-Driven Decision Making
- Leverage data analysis tools for portfolio insights
- Visualise data and communicate findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Stakeholder & Relationship Management
- Build cross-boundary relationships with senior stakeholders
- Influence strategic decisions through leadership and effective communication
Learning & Development
- Support recruitment, mentoring, and professional coaching
- Contribute to capability-building initiatives within the team
What Skills and Experience Do You Need?
Essential
- Proven strategic portfolio leadership in large-scale digital or transformation environments
- Experience in shaping portfolio frameworks, prioritising work, and ensuring alignment with strategic objectives
- Ability to anticipate risks, provide actionable solutions, and maintain momentum
- Strong data analysis skills with expertise in interpreting and visualising portfolio data
- Experience in relationship management at executive levels, with expertise in cross-department collaboration
- A recognised portfolio or programme management qualification (e.g., MoP®, P3O®, MSP, or PMI)
