Senior Director of Engineering (AI-First) at BigChange
Job Context
BigChange is facing a pivotal moment. As a global leader in AI-powered field service software, serving over 250,000 users worldwide, we’re redefining what’s possible. Our recent launch of BigChange Lightning—an AI intelligence layer deploying autonomous agents across field service operations—needs a strategic leader to drive the next phase of innovation.
Headquartered in Leeds and part of the global Simpro Group—the largest field service software network in the world—BigChange has transformed trades and field service businesses since 2013. Our platform connects jobs, people, and performance across industries like plumbing, HVAC, security, facilities management, and electrical contracting.
Trusted by over 2,200 high-growth businesses, we’ve processed billions in invoiced work, scheduled tens of millions of jobs, and been featured multiple times in the Sunday Times Tech Track 100. With BigChange Lightning, we’re entering a new era: AI-driven agents acting as virtual business partners, trainers, documentation specialists, and customer success experts—delivering scalability impossible with traditional workforce models.
The Role
This is a senior in-person leadership position at our Leeds HQ. You’ll lead the engineering organisation responsible for BigChange’s entire product suite—from the legacy monolith to our microservices platform and mobile applications—while fostering an AI-First engineering culture that empowers teams, accelerates delivery, and strengthens customer outcomes. You’ll report directly to executive leadership and play a pivotal role in shaping the technical future of one of the UK’s most recognised field service technology businesses.
Location: Leeds (LS15), on-site.
What You’ll Do
Team Leadership
- Build, mentor, and inspire high-performing engineering teams.
- Drive a culture of ownership, craftsmanship, and continuous improvement from squad level to organisational level.
- Develop engineering managers and create clear career pathways for individual contributors and leaders alike.
AI-First Culture Champion
- Champion the integration of AI into every layer of engineering—from developer tooling and CI/CD intelligence to the AI agents powering BigChange Lightning.
- Focus on transforming how engineers work, not just adopting AI tools.
- Embed AI as a core capability multiplier, enhancing every engineer’s impact.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
