Senior Ecologist

Experienced Ecologist Role (Greater Manchester Consultancy)

Salary: £35k–£45k DOE

About the Role

Enviro Recruitment is working with an Ecological Consultancy based in Greater Manchester, seeking an ambitious individual to join their ecology team.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Align with the consultancy’s values and vision.
  • Drive Project Management, maintain client liaison, and manage business operations.
  • Oversee and manage projects independently under the Ecology Director.
  • Produce high-quality ecological reports to support planning permission applications.

The consultancy prioritises an ecologist with:

  • Over 3 years’ experience in a consultancy environment.
  • Opportunity for career progress through:
    • Assisting in team expansion.
    • Training and mentoring junior staff.
  • Prior experience advising on UK legislation, planning policy, and Biodiversity Net Gain Policy for various schemes, including:
    • Residential developments.
    • Renewable energy projects.
    • Commercial schemes.
    • Householder applications.
    • Minerals and waste projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Project Management:

    • Manage Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs) and Protected Species Surveys across the UK.
    • Undertake and conduct Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) Assessments.
    • Collaborate with Landscape Architecture and Arboricultural Teams to provide integrated project advice.

  • Reporting & Client Engagement:

    • Deliver high-quality ecological reports for regulatory submissions.
    • Maintainclient liaison, draft fee proposals, and handle billing for assigned projects.
  • Stakeholder Liaison:

    • Establish and maintain relationships with Local Planning Authorities (LPA).
    • Ensure compliance and navigate planning system requirements confidently.

Qualification & Experience Requirements

  • Education:

    • Degree (or equivalent) in an Environmental Science discipline.
    • OR evidence of equivalent relevant experience.
  • Licences & Certifications:

    • Required:
      • Valid Natural England Bat Level 1 Licence or a single Bat or GCN Licence reference.
    • Desirable:
      • Natural England Bat Level 2 Licence and ability to draft Bat Ecological Impact Statements (EPSLs).
      • Membership of a professional body (CIEEM, IES, IEMA) (paid by employersyearly).
  • Technical & Operational Skills:

    • Proven ability to prepare PEAs, Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs), and Protected Species Surveys.
    • Proven capacity to independently author detailed ecological reports.
    • Experience of delivering site-based surveys across multiple project scales.
    • Self-driven, willing to travel for fieldwork: personal vehicle required for UK-wide coverage.
    • Willingness to undertake occasional overnight stays (1–2 nights) for projects (hotel expenses fully covered).

Employment Needs & Process

  • Position: Full-time, permanent.
  • Salary: £35,000 – £45,000 PA DOE (negotiable based on experience).
  • Additional Compensation: Include bonus scheme.

Assessment Process

  • Shortlisted candidates are invited for interview, where may include:
    • Production of written work samples to assess skills.
    • Attendance of a trial day (full/half day) to assess fit and technical suitability (time paid).
