Senior Ecologist

Ecologist or Senior Ecologist

The Opportunity

We seek an Ecologist or Senior Ecologist to join our team and collaborate on diverse projects across multiple sectors. You’ll work closely with our Principal Ecologist and contribute to growing an ecological team that embraces innovation, rigorous research, and forward-thinking biodiversity solutions.

As a Senior Ecologist, your responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating with cross-disciplinary teams (planning, engineering, design) supported by our broader Ecology Team.
  • Strengthening existing partnerships with water utilities and identifying new commercial opportunities.
  • Assisting in growing our client base under the guidance of senior leadership.
  • Managing complex ecological challenges, including:
    • Conducting ecological surveys and assessments.
    • Designing, implementing, and overseeing ecological mitigation and enhancement measures.
    • Applying for and securing protected species licences.
  • Mentoring junior staff, developing their technical skills, and fostering professional growth.
  • Operating with autonomy, advancing your career, and engaging in training and networking initiatives.

About You

Essential qualifications and experience:

  • Degree: Minimum BSc in Ecology or a closely related environmental discipline.
  • Industry experience: Proven background in consultancy or similar professional environments.
  • Legislative expertise: Deep understanding of UK and EU wildlife legislation and policy.
  • Assessment proficiency: Capability to lead detailed ecological assessments, such as PEAs (Partial Ecology Assessments), ECIAs (Environmental Cell Impact Assessments), and ecological chapters. Contribution to HRAs (Habitat Regulations Assessments) also required.
  • UKHaband Metrics: Familiarity with UKHab classification system and Defra Metrics is essential.
  • Licensed Surveys: Valid protected species survey licences (examples include great crested newt or bats), alongside experience in securing licences for these species.
  • Project management: Experience in overseeing projects, budgets, and client relationships.
  • Leadership and communication: Strong interpersonal skills, teamwork, and capacity for instructional leadership.

  • Travel requirements: A full UK driving licence and a willingness for frequent travel.

Ideally, You Will Also Have:

  • Membership of professional bodies such as CIEEM (Chartered Institute of Ecologists and Environmental Managers) or IEMA (Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment) would be advantageous.
  • Demonstrated success as a line manager.
