Job Summary

At the forefront of the fight to ensure Britain’s energy markets remain competitive, fair and fit for a Net Zero future, Ofgem is shaping the economic frameworks that protect consumers and drive innovation. We’re looking for a Senior Economist to join us and apply advanced competition economics to high-profile market assessments, enforcement activity and strategic regulatory design.

Ofgem is Great Britain’s independent energy regulator. We’re at the forefront of change across the energy sector, driving toward Net Zero whilst protecting energy consumers, especially vulnerable people.

We’re offering a permanent opportunity within our Strategy, Economics, Research and Net Zero Directorate, joining a respected and growing economics community at the heart of regulatory decision-making. You’ll work on complex, high-impact projects that shape market frameworks and influence how competition operates across the energy sector. As part of our Analysis Profession, you will also have the opportunity to contribute across directorates, supporting cross-organisation priorities and broadening your impact.

This is a role where your expertise will directly inform major policy and enforcement decisions, embedding rigorous economic thinking into our strategic direction. You’ll help shape market studies and competition cases, contribute to analytical best practice and strengthen our reputation as a leader in regulatory economics. Working collaboratively with policy, legal and other technical experts, you’ll ensure that economic analysis sits at the centre of robust, evidence-based regulation.

We’re looking for someone with a strong academic background in economics and practical experience applying economic analysis to real-world markets. You’ll bring the ability to design and deliver high-quality analysis, critically assess evidence and communicate complex insights clearly to varied audiences. You will also be confident building effective relationships and shaping debate across internal and external stakeholders.

In return, you’ll join an inclusive organisation that values analytical excellence and thoughtful challenge. You’ll benefit from hybrid working, a generous benefits package, and the opportunity to contribute to nationally significant work. As part of a strong professional community, you’ll collaborate with leading economists while helping to set the standard for regulatory best practice.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
