Role: Education Outreach Officer – Permanent Full-Time (Blended)


Salary: £29,588 with progression to £31,236 per annum

About the Role

This is an excited opportunity to join the Library’s Education Outreach and Transition team. You will work on:

  • Developing teaching resources
  • Delivering outreach activities for local schools using the Library’s collections, including:
    • Materials from Special Collections and Archives
    • Information resources

The ideal candidate is: ✅ Highly self-motivated and able to work independently ✅ A great team player ✅ Skilled in communication (engaging with colleagues, teachers, researchers, and the public)

Working arrangements:

  • Permanent, full-time (37 hours/week)
  • Blended working possible

You will also undergo an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check as required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engagement with schools:

    • Support school visits to the Library (librarian tours, study skills sessions for sixth-formers)
  • Outreach projects & workshops:

    • Help plan, deliver, and evaluate activities for local schools
  • Special Collections & Archives:

    • Identify and (if necessary) arrange digitisation of resources from these collections for:
      • Classroom activities
      • Curriculum-focused workshops
  • Digital resources & online engagement:

    • Update website content alongside the Digital Library team
    • Create web resources and online exhibitions under supervision
  • Communications & promotion:

    • Manage team newsletters and other promotional materials
    • Source and co-ordinate promotional merchandise
  • Administrative tasks:

    • Handle school visit bookings
    • Process Sixth Form access forms
    • Gather and collate feedback from workshops
  • Data & reporting:

    • Collect data on team activities and produce reports for strategic planning
  • Professional development & growth:

    • Maintain knowledge of best practices in outreach and education
  • Other duties:

    • Perform any related tasks relevant to the role

Person Specification

Key Skills & Experience

✔ Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (essential for working with diverse groups) ✔ Strong organisational skills, able to prioritise workloads ✔ Competent in information technology (experience with Microsoft Office) ✔ Ability to work independently, showing initiative ✔ Experience teaching, supporting, or engaging with secondary school students ✔ Experience in website content creation (blogs, webpages, digital exhibitions)

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5 GCSEs (including Maths and English) at grades 9-4 (with resit if necessary—check paid role for details)
  • A Levels (or equivalent) or higher-level qualifications preferred, though not mandatory
