Senior Electrical Design Engineer (Decarbonisation & Energy Solutions) – Manchester (Full-Time)

Equans is seeking a Senior Electrical Design Engineer to drive high-quality electrical designs for decarbonisation and sustainable retrofit projects, focusing on low-carbon solutions such as solar PV, battery storage, LED lighting, and building power infrastructure. This role involves technical leadership, design coordination, and mentorship within a multidisciplinary team.

About the Role

Responsible for delivering cutting-edge electrical designs supporting the integration of low-carbon and energy-efficiency technologies across commercial, public-sector, and mixed-use buildings, including retrofit and new-build projects.

Key focus areas:

  • Solar PV (ground-mounted & building-integrated BIPV), battery storage, intelligent controls (e.g., for heat pumps), and high-efficiency lighting systems
  • Coordinating low-carbon solutions with mechanical building services
  • Mentorship and team development

What You’ll Deliver

Electrical Design & Engineering

  • Low-voltage (LV) electrical design expertise to integrate:
    • Power distribution, solar PV, battery storage
    • LED lighting (retrofit and BIPV applications)
    • Smart controls for heat pumps and other energy efficiency measures
    • Optimisation for buildings across security, education, healthcare, and residential sectors
  • Proven experience in solar PV design (ground-mounted and building-integrated systems)
  • Integration of PV systems with electrical infrastructure and low-carbon technologies
  • Strategic coordination with mechanical services engineers
  • Full project lifecycle electrical design from RIBA Stage 2 to 5 (e.g., primary and secondary power circuits, lighting layouts, power planning)
  • Technical specifications:
    • Schedules, single-line diagrams (SLDs), schematics
    • Detailed explanatory reports and modelling tools
    • BS 7671, IET Wiring Regulations, and UK Building Regulations compliance
  • DNO (Distribution Network Operator) interactions, from feasibility assessment to formal DNO applications
  • Familiarity with renewable accreditation schemes (MCS – Microgeneration Certification Scheme)
  • Design verification, QA, and sign-off of electrical systems and technical standards

Technical Tools & Software

  • AutoCAD proficiency (required)
  • Good working knowledge of BIM workflows (Revit desirable)
  • Experience with 3D electrical modelling, advanced circuit diagrams, and visualisation

Project & Team Leadership

  • Coordinating multidisciplinary electrical design packages:
    • Managing inputs from public-sector clients, contractors, specialists
  • Client and stakeholder communications: Constructing and delivering technical presentations for feasibility, technical queries, and risk management
  • Familiarity with procurement routes:
    • Design & Build, Traditional, Public Sector Delivery Review (PSDR) (public-led consultation process)
  • Mentoring junior engineers
  • Conflict resolution between technical teams
  • Risk identification and mitigation, maintenance and management of risk registers
  • Commercial proposals: Preparing quotes, tender scopes, fee estimates
  • Managing multiple concurrent projects and deadlines with strong organisational skills

Who You Are

Qualifications

✅ Degree in Electrical Engineering or Building Services Engineering (BEng, or equivalent) ✅ Chartered or aspiring (CEng) status encouraged ✅ RIBA/Construction experience (or other proven project delivery governance)

Experience

✅ Technical leadership in sustainable and energy-efficiency retrofit projects (focus on solar PV, low-carbon systems, energy storage) ✅ Multi-disciplinary project delivery, coordinating teams in:

  • UK Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS), Whole Heat & Domestic Heat Decarbonisation Funds (WH/SHDF) dropsites
  • Council, NHS, military, academic sector specifications ✅ *(Council-side) Legal compliance know-how: Building Safety Act 2022, Fire Safety Order, BIM and information layers for Authorised FIRE-APs
