Senior Electrical Design Engineer - Power Systems
Lead Design Engineer – Power Systems Consulting
RINA is looking for a highly experienced Lead Design Engineer to join its growing Power Systems Consulting team, delivering complex Substation Design and Power Systems Studies engagements for large power and electricity corporations, DNOs, utility companies, and Data Center operators.
The portfolio is broad, advising clients on complex issues such as: grid capacity/integration, high-voltage power line design, site surveys, carbon capture, and other sustainable engineering solutions. This is an exciting opportunity to advise the Electrical Power sector on developing modern and sustainable solutions.
This role is based out of our Manchester office, though RINA is a smart/hybrid working organisation. Moderate travel across the UK is required.
The Role
You will lead Substation Design projects, ensuring solutions are compliant, safe, and adhere to industry standards.
Responsibilities
- Act as technical lead for substation design project deliverables ranging from 11 kV to 400 kV, including HV/EHV air-insulated and gas-insulated substations.
- Lead or contribute to client meetings and technical workshops related to substation engineering.
- Produce detailed substation electrical design packages compliant with client and applicable national/international standards (ENA, BS, IEC, IEEE, ANSI, etc.).
- Prepare and review engineering calculations, technical reports, and equipment specifications.
- Develop technical documentation, including design reports, scheme evaluations, and presentations, particularly for FEED and concept-stage projects.
- Ensure compliance and quality assurance (QA) with CDM Regulations and all other applicable legal and regulatory requirements related to substation and electrical system design.
- Drive and embed a Safety-by-Design approach across all projects.
- Provide engineering input to budgets, schedules, forecasts, and risk and change management activities.
- Work closely with Protection & Control, Civil/Structural, and other engineering disciplines to support multidisciplinary project delivery.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers, graduates, and consultants.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
