Senior Electrical Design Manager
Location: Chesterfield Substation Project (UK) Consultancy: Laing O’Rourke
Are you excited by the opportunity to help shape the future of the UK’s electricity network? We’re looking for a Senior Electrical Design Manager to lead the Chesterfield substation project, laying the foundation for a net-zero energy transition.
This role sits at the heart of the Great Grid Upgrade—where technical excellence meets national infrastructure strategy.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Lead electrical design management for a complex EHV substation project, guiding strategy from concept through to delivery.
- Provide technical leadership across design teams, supply chain partners, and construction crews, ensuring design integrity and buildability.
- Oversee design assurance, compliance, and integration, aligning with UK transmission standards and regulatory frameworks.
- Collaborate closely with project and site leadership to optimise programme delivery and cost-efficiency.
- Act as the primary client interface and key stakeholder link, ensuring project alignment with ESB Network’s vision.

What You’ll Bring
- Proven senior-level experience in EHV/HV substation design, preferably within large-scale infrastructure programmes.
- Deep expertise in UK network standards (e.g., IET, ENA, Ofgem regulations) and safety accreditations for transmission assets.
- Strong judgement in design discussions, ability to challenge assumptions and influence outcomes at senior levels.
- Collaborative mindset, adept at bridging technical detail, construction realities, and commercial priorities.
- Experience navigating multi-disciplinary/multi-organisation teams while balancing technical, programme, and cost demands.
