Job Description

Job Summary

Our Building Services team are seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to join the Building Services Design Consultant Engineering team based in our Croydon office to:

  • Lead MEP and multi-disciplinary teams on small and medium-sized projects
  • Lead the electrical discipline on large projects
  • Provide technical training and mentoring to junior engineers

About the Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic self-motivated professional with:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A desire to make a difference in electrical engineering within building services
  • Experience in collaborating with clients and architects across UK, European, and worldwide projects

This role is classified under two key focus areas:

  1. Associate Director (with broad responsibilities)

    • Seeking knowledge of all disciplines (not exclusively electrical)
    • Requires strong South East of England market experience
    • Appointee type: Associate Director
  2. Electrical Engineer (technical focus)

    • Minimum 6 years’ experience in electrical building services design
    • Specific expertise in:
      • Low-voltage distribution
      • Lighting and emergency lighting systems
      • Fire detection and alarms/lightning protection
    • Essential experience in building services engineering software (e.g., Autodesk Revit)
    • Focus on mentorship and training junior engineers
    • Appointee type: Electrical engineer

About the Office & Team

The Croydon MEP team currently comprises approximately 16 engineers, with plans for growth in the coming years.

Key details:

  • The team collaborates closely with offices in St Albans and London
  • Occasional travel between locations to ensure operational support
  • Notable recent projects:
    • No 1 Knightsbridge
    • One Braham
    • Sackville House
    • Lots Road Powerhouse
    • London Ambulance Services South London 11 Control Centre
    • Tower Bridge
    • London Power Tunnel 2
    • Snowdonia VIP Cable Tunnel

The team is also engaged in public and private decarbonisation schemes, enhancing their reputation for high-impact work.


Job Responsibilities

  • Project & Team Management

    • Coordinate and lead small project teams
    • Serve as the discipline lead electrical engineer for mid-to-large projects
    • Provide technical input and support for design and studies
    • Direct technical efforts and present engineering solutions to clients
  • Quality & Technical Support

    • Perform quality control reviews of work by junior engineers
    • Participate in technical proposal development
    • Create preliminary budget & schedule estimates for projects
    • Conduct bid preparation activities:
      • Assist in pre-qualification evaluations
      • Resolve tender queries
      • Review tender submissions
  • Client & Disciplinary Engagement

    • Attend meetings with clients, present project updates and strategies
    • Facilitate technical & coordination sessions
    • Liaise with all stakeholders, including:
      • Architects
      • Cost consultants
      • Other designers
      • Contractors
      • Suppliers
      • Subcontractors
    • Identify and align with client expectations
  • BIM & Planning Skills

    • Be familiar with Building Information Modelling (BIM) design processes
    • Lead projects designed within Autodesk Revit

Requirements

Minimum

  • Work experience in consulting or relevant business environment
  • Ability to travel across the South East (occasionally further beyond)
  • Commitment to regular in-office presence in Croydon for team integration
  • Technical expertise in building services engineering
    • Critical thinking, independence, and ability to manage projects
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Proven ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams across multiple projects
  • Experience in project and client management, including budget & schedule restrictions
  • Adept at mentoring engineers and technicians
  • Track record of acquiring new business and building client relationships
  • Proficiency in technical written/oral communication

  • Degree in mechanical or building services (or related fields) with Chartered status or pathway to qualification.
  • BPSS or SC qualification (preferred)
  • Iceña wiproqual professional certifications beneficial
