Senior Electrical Engineer

Senior Electrical Engineer – Leeds Oncology Contract (St James’ University Hospital)

Location: St James’ University Hospital, Leeds Type: Permanent, Full-time (40 hours per week) Compensation: Competitive salary and benefits package


About the Role

EQUANS are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join their dynamic maintenance team at St James’ University Hospital. You’ll play a key role in ensuring the Leeds Oncology Wing operates at the highest standards through a reactive and planned maintenance service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work alongside the maintenance team to delivers world-class facilities services
  • Deliver a highly responsive, customer-facing maintenance service to the Oncology Wing
  • Undertake complex reactive and planned maintenance tasks, including:
    • Maintenance, repairs, testing, and inspection of building, mechanical, and electrical services (aligned with relevant standards and procedures)
    • Cover for absent colleagues to maintain service continuity
  • carry out duties safely and ethically in line with NHS, Trust, and Company guidelines
  • Maintain and repair a diverse range of services, including:
    • Heating and domestic water systems
    • General electrical services (lighting, power distribution)
    • Air handling units
    • Low voltage electrical distribution and switchgear
    • Emergency standby generating plant
    • Fire alarm & emergency lighting systems
    • Electrical control systems & Building Management Systems (BMS)
  • Technical mentoring role: Provide guidance and support to colleagues
  • Record and report progress on tasks to line managers and stakeholders
  • Training requirements: Develop skills to undertake Authorised Person duties through internal training programmes
  • Cross-skilling & adaptability: Work flexibly across multiple tasks and systems
  • Ability to work unasstisted, independently, flexibly and thoroughly
  • Undertake overtime when needed to meet operational demands

Core Duties & Complexity Level

  • Ensure all electrical systems, plant, and equipment meet operational and safety standards
  • Emergency response readiness: Provide cover when required to ensure continuity of services
  • Maintain, service, and repair complex systems (as outlined above)
  • Workshop analysis & HAZCONs where appropriate
  • Installation support: Assist with upgrading, adapting, and fitting new components
  • Collaborate with other skilled trades (e.g., mechanical, plumbing) for high-impact projects
  • Authorisation compliance: Act as Competent or Authorised Person where appointed
  • Complete reports on work completed, in-progress, and future requirements
  • Training & upskilling path: Regular development and upskilling to maintain industry expertise

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Qualified Time-Served Engineer required (apprenticeship completion validated by professional body)
  • Minimum 3 years post-apprenticeship experience
  • Healthcare experience desirable (not essential)
  • Cross-trade experience advantageous
