Senior Electrical Engineer - Lighting & Energy Solutions
At WSP, you can access our global scale, contribute to landmark projects, and connect with the brightest minds in your field to do the best work of your life. You can embrace your curiosity in a culture that celebrates new ideas and diverse perspectives. You can experience a world of opportunity and the chance to shape a career as unique as you.
To meet our growing UK business needs and future development aspirations, we are looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer to join our Lighting & Energy Solutions team.
About the Role
You will provide low-voltage electrical design and consultancy services, taking ownership of defined workstreams on complex engineering projects and supporting technical leads on nationally significant schemes. Roles include playing a key role in delivering high-quality, compliant designs, while contributing to coordination across multi-disciplinary teams and supporting less experienced colleagues.
Diversity of Projects
You can expect to work on a diverse range of projects for major public and private sector clients, including:
- Small and large-scale Electric Vehicle (EV) infrastructure feasibility studies, design, and technical assurance roles (including local authority LEVI schemes and multi-vector refuelling hubs with megawatt charging systems and low-carbon fuels).
- Renewable energy generation and energy storage system specification and design to support decabonisation and net zero objectives.
- Urban realm and regeneration projects to create safe, attractive, and functional public spaces.
- Highway electrical design and technical assurance for local authority and National Highways clients.
Key Responsibilities
Here’s what you could expect each day across a varied workload:
- Take responsibility for the delivery of defined design packages, ensuring right-first-time, high-quality, safe, and compliant designs (including CDM regulations).
- Support design team leads or project managers on larger projects, including undertaking technical design checks and contributing to reviews to ensure alignment with scope and standards.
- Act as design lead on smaller or less complex projects, managing discipline inputs, project programme, and commercial performance, and escalating risks or issues in a timely manner.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate risks within your workstreams, ensuring safe, compliant, and buildable design solutions.
- Coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams and key stakeholders, maintaining effective communication from concept through to construction stages.
- Contribute to project meetings, workshops, and reviews, providing clear technical input and progressing actions.
- Support the development of junior engineers and technicians by providing guidance, checking work, and contributing to their professional development.
- Contribute to bid and tender activities, including technical scope definition, method statements, and estimating for electrical elements.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
